As of March, 95 percent of HISD’s 240,000 students had contacted the district, according to Latham. Due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and the recent increase in cases, the district will maintain the current 2020-21 school year calendar with a later start date and an additional 10 days of targeted remedial or academic boot camp
Students who may be behind academically due to COVID-19. The later start date will allow the district to monitor patterns of COVID-19 cases and make necessary adjustments based on in-person, virtual training, or a combination of the two.

The announcement came three days after Texas education agencies recommended three options for the future: shifting to a one-year model, adding 30 days to the traditional 180-day calendar, or extending the school year with intermittent breaks.
The area has been involved in many food distributions as the pandemic has changed the way residents live in the area. According to Lathan, HISD distributed nearly 5.2 million pounds of food to 125,000 households. Two draft calendars for 2020-2021 have been posted on the CISD website and are available for districts to share with their staff and communities.
During that time period, more than 3,600 comments were sent through the district website. DLPDMC has considered comments and suggestions received from staff, parents, and the community and has drafted the Recommendation Calendar A – Revised.
