It is noteworthy that the prisoners were given plenty of time to sort out their affairs before leaving the province – despite the fact that John Tilton had previously ignored the sentence of deportation.
Later records show that the Quakers never actually left the colony. In fact, the following May, Stuyvesant was still trying to remove them. Shortly thereafter, the Dutch lost administrative control over the English towns of New Netherland, as the neighboring state of Connecticut forcefully asserted British sovereignty over all of Long Island.
Samuel Spicer lived in Gravesend until the 1680s. The Tiltons also lived there for the rest of their lives. Despite Stuyvesant’s authoritarian tendencies, the administrative and police state at his disposal was weak and he was unable to enforce them on Long Island.

Salomon Lachaire was baptized at the Walloon Church in Amsterdam in 1628, attended by exiled French Protestants. His father was a weaver, and he was a “Made Tailor” by trade when he married in 1650. Lachair immigrated to New Netherland before 1655. Before leaving at this time, he had to take a law degree and master the English language, quite a leap for someone from the artisan class.

This sets them apart from the rest of the community, cementing their new group identity. By incurring persecution and suffering for their faith, they put more energy into their spiritual journey. At the same time, his status among the more established Friends increased accordingly.

So Bowen willingly accepted the challenge in his broad-brimmed Quaker hat, even though he knew it would hurt his chances of getting a favorable judgment. This is the first step openly taken on a longer spiritual journey.
Through the dramatic scene above, we enter John Bowen’s diary, in which he recorded key events from 1649 to 1694. By modern genre standards, much of it is more autobiographical than diary: recounting life’s highlights and milestones rather than
on a record of the day’s events. In fact, apart from a few business accounts and his wedding dates and children’s birthdays, this is Bowne’s first entry in eleven years. The previous post commemorates his first trip to Flushing in 1651. Even sequences that unfold with a sense of everyday presence are often recreated from Bowen’s mental notes during the writer’s next free-lance.

It is not clear what exactly the term refers to, but it could be a sentry box or a cell near the barracks at Fort Amsterdam. The “dungeon” is probably also located in the fort, as the only other place of detention at New Amsterdam is the Stadt Huys, or City Hall, where Bowne was not moved until the next month.
The term brings to mind the account of Robert Hodgson, who was almost martyred by Stuyvesant after his arrival at Woodhouse in 1657, who brought the first Quakers to New Needs Lan (New Netherland): “I was thrown into a dungeon. I was not
