Oceanside Schools Calendar – Moving into the upcoming academic year, some dates may change as the coronavirus pandemic moves on for a year and a half. While a mix of in-person, virtual and hybrid learning is still possible in Oceanside, Gov. Gavin Newsom recently reiterated his desire to get students back into the classroom so they can reap the social and emotional benefits of full-time.
– Individual learning. Newsom urged residents — including teachers — to sign up for a COVID-19 vaccine if they haven’t already done so. He said the decision by Californians who have blocked vaccinations could affect businesses and private education.

On May 11, at the Board of Education’s regular meeting, the OUSD Board voted to approve a full return to pre-pandemic, private school hours in the fall of 2021, with mitigation strategies such as masks, hand hygiene and physical distancing as needed.
. Unless state and local guidelines prohibit these plans, all Oceanside students in grades TK-12 will be on campus five days a week in the fall. The Oceanside “Bridges” program was introduced to a new group of 7th graders this year, and has also been restarted for 9th and 11th graders whose participation was interrupted by the pandemic.

Bridges is a 6-year program that brings together middle and high school students from Oceanside and Uniondale several times each year to learn and discuss current issues and events. Read the story in the Oceanside/Island Park Herald.
The school calendar should: – cover at least nine calendar months – start no earlier than the third Monday in August – use 180 days for instruction – use three days for collective professional development – use no more than two days to prepare for the opening of school
Don’t (Teacher Work Days) – Use the remaining five days for teacher planning, study planning and parent conferences – plus, schools should have three weather make-up days built into their academic calendar. As was the case last year, these policies may change at any time in the event of severe weather or based on guidance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The California Department of Public Health said it will evaluate COVID-19-related safety rules in schools on an ongoing basis and will decide by Nov. 1 whether to update mask requirements or guidelines. Oceanside High School’s literary magazine, published each spring by the Literary Magazine Club, won first place in the American Scholastic Magazine Press Association’s annual review and competition awards.
The organization reviews both college/university and senior high school education publications. Bonnie Hennessy, OHS English teacher, and Nancy Nigro, who teaches photography and Photoshop, are club advisors. The Sixth Grade Project Extra classes at Schools #5 and #8 under the direction of teachers Christine Stee (School #5) and Sheila Gunther (School #8) have been named New York State Finalists for the second year in a row at Samsung.
Settle for tomorrow’s race. #5 and #8 schools out of 300 public schools nationwide, selected from over 1,000 entrants. Of the 300 state finalists, only a handful are elementary schools. If the district is forced to close school on a day, the school must use one of its three built-in make-up days to make up that day.

If we have to cancel more than three days of school due to inclement weather, the board can vote (by majority vote) to excuse up to three additional days after we use the three make-up days.
