Nys Dcjs Training Calendar – The Public Safety Bureau is responsible for administering police training programs and certified peace officers and initiatives developed to improve the productivity and professionalism of law enforcement and private and public safety personnel in New York.

In addition, the Public Security Bureau is responsible for approving and certifying police training courses and instructors and security officer schools. The following programs and services describe the responsibilities assigned to the Office of Public Safety, either by governing law or by other government authority or recommendations.

2 credits This is a 32-hour DCJS certified course. This course will train the participant in the use of radar / LIDAR speed detection equipment. The curriculum includes radar / LIDAR theory, vehicle and transport law, court preparation and presentation.

Office Of Public Safety

Each participant will develop the skills to measure radar / LIDAR equipment and practice speed estimation. Each participant will receive a final written exam and a practical exam based on the performance of the acquired skills.

Course objective: After completing this course, each participant will develop the necessary skills to use various radar / LIDAR speed sensing devices. 2 credits This course equips law enforcement personnel with the skills to conduct patrol and law enforcement operations using modern bicycles.

Participants will practice good environmental practices in urban, residential and rural areas. Students will also learn proper care, maintenance and equipment selection, body repair and self-defense techniques. This program includes both classes and exercises. Radar/Leader Operator

2 credits This course trains paralegals assigned to work in schools. Using the triad approach of law enforcement, intervention and education, the officer will learn how to establish and facilitate a community-based law enforcement program. An SRO is a combination of all the skills a person brings to the position: law enforcement, parent, sibling, teacher, counselor, resource, and public servant.

The agency will leave only after five days fully equipped to perform all the tasks required for the OAR. They will come with valuable information, knowledge, tools to review and new skills that will give them insight and a better understanding of the duties and expectations of the OAR.

1.5 credits This program is designed to increase a police officer’s ability to detect a drunk driver. The course teaches the officer how to build a strong common law case with an emphasis on administering the Standard Field Sobriety Tests (SFST) developed by NHTSA.

Law Enforcement Bicycle Patrol Course

This course is offered by OPS, law enforcement agencies and higher education institutions. 4 credits This is a 70-hour DCJS certified course. This course teaches officers how to record and document crime scenes and how to properly collect evidence.

It is particularly suitable for officers who first arrive at a crime scene and those involved in extensive crime scene analysis. The course includes instruction in photography, sketching, measurements, latent fingerprint processing, and physical evidence recovery.

Objectives include understanding and establishing the physical boundaries of a crime scene, protection of a crime scene from contamination and degradation, accurate identification of evidence at a crime scene, practical knowledge of powder/chemical evidence treatment and knowledge of preventive measures, as appropriate.

Law Enforcement Services

4 credits Topics include an overview of sniper operations; shooting results using medium restrictions, bezel / minute angle; data management, coding techniques, the ability to view, hide and anonymize; field/hunting gear, urban sniper operations, range estimation;

and dynamic negotiations; store in memory systems (KIMS). LEGAL OFFICER ONLY 0.5 credit This NHTSA program is designed to train individuals in the proper procedures and techniques to teach the NHTSA Velocity Measurement Operator Series (Radar and LIDAR).

School Resource Officer

This course will consist of classroom presentations and field exercises Prerequisites: Certified Radar or Radar-LIDAR Operator with current and valid General Studies Instructor status. 2 credits This 35-hour course is designed to provide officers with the skills necess
ary to serve warrants and deal with high-risk situations such as prowler calls and building searches;

4.5 credits This is a 70 hour DCJS certified course. This course teaches the basic skills required of a newly hired criminal investigator. Topics include general investigative techniques, crime analysis, report writing, legal issues, criminal management, physical evidence, preparation of search warrants and forensic evidence.

Dwi Detection / Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course

The participant will conduct a crime scene, interview and question victims, witnesses and suspects while preparing the case for trial, at which time the participant will testify in a jury trial. The final exam will consist of written, oral and practical skills, including peer assessment.

Those who pass the skills test, written test, and presentation test will receive certification as a Safety Skills Instructor from the Municipal Police Bureau. Each participant must provide a gun belt, handcuffs with locks, a muzzle, a straight stick and ring holder, elliptical trainers, and appropriate hand training clothing.

Radar/Lidar Instructor

2 credits Program Overview: This course is designed by NHTSA to empower officers to provide accurate and timely information in both routine and emergency situations. Students will learn the duties and responsibilities of a PIO, legal communications, press releases and interviews.

Includes lectures and mock interviews. 2 credits This is a 24-hour DCJS certified course. This breath test operator course certifies law enforcement personnel in the operation of the Datamaster and Datamaster’s new, exclusive DMT Infrared Breath Test.

This program provides information on the effects of alcohol on the human body, operating procedures, vehicle and traffic laws related to DWI enforcement, and applicable case law. Students must pass both a written test and an instrument proficiency test to be certified.

LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL ONLY. 3.5 credits This is a DCJS certified course. Course outline includes Legal Issues and Prosecution of Driving, Emergency Response Driving, Emergency Response Driving, and Traffic Management. This course is designed to provide investigators and uniformed officers with proven techniques that can be used in a variety of interview situations and countermeasures. Participants will develop skills in preparing for an interview with a “game plan” that emphasizes a substantive role rather than an active one.

Lesson lists, videotaped exercises and classroom experiences used in teaching. The course includes updated information on the legal aspects of interrogation and the admissibility of confessions in court. 2 credits This course is designed for patrol officers whose duties require the use of an AR-style police rifle.

Basic Criminal Investigation

There is no physical training, but the participant must be able to withstand heavy shooting and movement in accordance with the environment in which the guard can respond.
