Onam is a harvest festival that celebrates the return of the legendary King Mahabali/Maveli to the country. The festival falls in the month of Chingam, between August and September, according to the Malay calendar. It also marks the beginning of the Malayalam year, called Kula Varsham.

It is a 10-day festival, with a lot of meaning for everyone. The first day is called Atham, followed by Chithira, Chodi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketta, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradom and Thiruvonam. Thiruvonam is the last day – considered the most auspicious event.

Onam is not a celebration of one or two days. Onam is a grand gala of 10 festivals. In 2022, Onam festival celebrations will begin on August 30 and end with Thiru Onam on September 8.

This day is one of the most important days of Onam festival. On this day, Vallamkali is celebrated in a grand manner. Vallamkali means snake boat race. This race is organized on the banks of the Pemba River in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala in a village called Ernamula.

Onam celebrations last for almost twelve days. The main Onam day is known as Thiruvonam day and is observed when Nakshatra Thiruvonam prevails during the Madhyahna part of the day as per the Hindu division of the day.

The preparations and rituals of Onam begin about ten days before the Thiruvanam day when the Nakshatra Atham prevails during the Madhyahana part of the day. The first day of Onam is known as Attachamayam day.

October 1 begins on Kenny 15. Tulum 1, 2022 begins on October 18. Durgashtami, Mahanavami and Vijayadashami 2022 falls in the month of October. Vidyarambham 2022 falls on 5th October. 2022 Deepavali will be celebrated on Monday, October 24.

The sixth day of Onam is known as Thirikta. It turns out that various cultural programs are well organized by the committees in villages, towns and cities.
