From the moment we began planning for the spring semester, we knew that we would have to remain flexible and open not only to the rapidly changing situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to feedback from you, the members of our community.

When we shared our spring plan last month, we knew that one of the most difficult things would be related to the change to the spring break schedule, specifically that we would not have the traditional break due to concerns about the increased risk of COVID infection.

-19 due to activities related to transportation. Working within certain constraints, we considered many possible scenarios and settled on a calendar that allowed at least some rest and personal time, but, as we have heard from you clearly in recent weeks, we have since realized the need to repeat.

I also wanted to let you know that within the next week we will be communicating more information about our January recovery plan related to COVID screening testing. Washington University of Science and Technology has a term system with 10 weeks per semester.

There are four quarters in the academic year, and they are called the Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn quarters. For more information, please refer to the academic calendar in the University catalog. We hope these changes will be useful to you.

We realize that this has been and continues to be a very difficult time for all of you. It is very important that we do everything we can to support our community, and especially focus on your mental health and well-being in the coming months.

We hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that sometime in the spring semester we will be able to fully return to normal college life. Until then, please know that we are here to support you and are always open to your feedback as we find our way forward together.

An early start will allow us to create one additional wellness day during the spring semester, in addition to the two previously planned. The updated calendar includes two consecutive health days on Tuesday, March 2 and Wednesday, March 3, and an additional health day on Monday, April 12. We are starting the spring semester one day earlier than previously communicated, on Monday, January 25, for Arts and Sciences

, McKelvey School of Engineering, Olin School of Business, Sam Fox School and University College. (The spring semester will still begin on January 19 for the Brown School and the Law School.) We will work closely with the faculty to ensure that no class meetings are scheduled on health days, and that no assessments or major assignments are given on those days.

immediately after these days are not paid. We want to make sure we reserve these days, which are meant to be breaks from academic work, including studying for tests or completing important coursework. We will contact faculty directly with additional guidance.

The University of Washington recognizes individual student choice in observing religious holidays that occur during periods in which classes are scheduled. Students are encouraged to arrange with their instructors to cover missed work due to religious observance, and instructors are asked to make every reasonable effort to accommodate such requests.
