Tamug Academic Calendar – Developing a learning environment is a critical component of success. CALS supports learning community building in several ways to ensure that every student on campus develops the connections they need. Through the Hullabaloo U program, each first-year student participates in a first-year experiential project that supports their academic and social transformation.

The F1RST program serves first-generation students, helping them transition to higher education by providing research-based, multi-level support to address their unique challenges. The Galveston Gateway program helps incoming students fully prepare for their studies. Students accepted to the Gateway Galveston program arrive on campus in Summer II and complete preparatory courses before full enrollment at the university.

The Academic Learning Program is an excellent resource for students who could use additional support in developing important academic skills. With elements that include goal setting, time management, study skills, and skill development, our professional coaches help each participant learn skills that will benefit them.

We support students’ highest learning opportunities by integrating their comprehensive academic activities into a purposeful learning journey. Important aspects of these efforts include fostering development across academic environments, navigating skills and learning activities for an ever-evolving learning environment, and providing individualized student solutions.

We serve as an academic advising resource for all first-year students. Our goal is to provide students with the tools and guidance to take ownership of their education and achieve their goals. We also support all students in the General Studies program to help students transition between majors.

Communication is one of the most important skills that a student should develop regardless of the field of study. CALS has many resources to help everyone on campus develop the necessary communication skills in written, oral, and multimedia areas.

At the Writing Lab, we don’t just edit; we teach you the skills and techniques to improve your writing for academic growth, career success, and lifelong learning. The studio provides an interactive space for student-supported visual and verbal communication in 1-on-1 sessions, classroom presentations, and workshops for presentation practice, video production, and conversational audio recording.
