The earliest known celebration of Flag Day is attributed to George Morris in 1864. The first known celebration of Flag Day was in 1885, when dentist Bernard J. Sigrand hosted the official Flag Day celebration at Stony Hill School in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Recognizing The United States Flag Disputed Claims Over The First Flag Day
The second week of June is considered National Flag Week. The flag of the United States is flown at half-mast (or at half-mast) when a nation or state is in mourning. The President may, by Presidential Proclamation, order the governor of a state or the mayor of the District of Columbia to fly the flag at half-staff.
Often, this is done to mark the death of a government official, military member, or first responder; in honor of Memorial Day or other national day of remembrance; or following a national tragedy. That’s why it’s also important to know the correct way to display the American flag at half-staff.
There are some encounters with the American flag that may surprise you: for example, we only fly the flag from sunrise to noon to celebrate Memorial Day. However, we fly the flag at half-staff for a full day (which is considered sunrise to sunset) on May 15th each year for Peace Officers Memorial Day.
The day, established by a resolution approved in 1962, honors fallen officers who gave their lives to protect their communities. We also fly the flag at half-staff on National Firefighters Day, which varies in date but is always in October.

The Wikipedia article on Betsy Ross indicates that she made “ship colors” (naval flags) for the Pennsylvania Navy during the Revolutionary War. These flags did not look like the American flag. After the Revolution, Mrs. Ross made the US flag for 50 years.

When many of us learned that Betsy Ross, a seamstress from Philadelphia, was the designer of the flag, that legend has been discredited. According to several sources, President George Washington visited Betsy in Philadelphia, but brought with him a flag with 13 red and white stripes and 13 six-pointed stars in a circle.
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed a resolution defining the colors, configuration, and symbolism of the Stars and Stripes, aka The American Flag. The Second Continental Congress convened in 1775 after the invasion of Massachusetts. The Olive Branch Petition was sent to King George III as a last ditch effort to prevent war. George Washington was appointed head of the Continental Army.
At noon on February 15, 1965, Canada’s red and white maple leaf flag was hoisted for the first time on Parliament Hill. In 1996, this same day was declared National Flag Day of Canada. According to some sources, including Britannica.com, the use of the flag is believed to have originated in ancient China, around 1046-256 BC.
