Wednesday, February 1, 2023, will be Imolc, and Thursday, February 2, will be Candlemas and Groundhog Day. The custom in some European countries was to leave Christmas decorations up until February 1st (and it was considered lucky to leave the decorations up on Candlemas).

Detailed Daily Guide

For example, Robert Herrick (1591-1674) begins his poem “The Rites of Candlemas Eve” with “Down with rosaries and bays, down with mistletoe; Instead of holly, then raise the green box (to show).” Here is a link to the full poem: http://www.luminarium.org/sevenlit/herrick/candlemas1.htm However, not all cultures associate the February full moon with extreme cold and death.

The Hopi tribe calls it the Moon of Purification and Renewal, which is very appropriate because the Snow Full Moon is the first full moon of the year according to the lunar calendar. Cultures that follow a lunar calendar, especially East Asian cultures, tend to associate the new moon with new beginnings for this very reason.

For example, the ancient Chinese called the Moon Moon. On Sunday morning, February 5, 2023 (the day of the full moon), as twilight begins (6:11 a.m.), the full moon will be visible at 13 degrees west-

sets in the west. The planet Mercury will be 3 degrees above the East-South. The brightest star closest to the horizon will be Arcturus at 68 degrees south-southwest. Arcturus is the 4th brightest star in the night sky and is 36.7 light years from us.

Morning Sky Highlights

While it has the same mass as our Sun, it is 2.6 billion years old and has consumed basic hydrogen, becoming a red giant 25 times the mass of our Sun and 170 times the mass of our Sun.

From Friday evening to Saturday morning, February 3 to 4, the bright star Pollux will be visible near the full moon. Pollux will turn clockwise towards the moon and move to the lower right as the night progresses.

By the end of late evening (6:31 PM EST) Pollux will be about 4 degrees above the Moon. The Moon will reach its highest point in 5 hours (11:15 PM) with Pollux 5 degrees to the upper right.

At the time of dawn (at 6:12 AM) Pollux will be 9 degrees to the lower right of the Moon. On Sunday evening, February 26, 2023, at the end of twilight (6:55 p.m.) the Pleiades will set 6 hours later (around 1 AM on Monday morning).

When To See The Full Moon In February

We have a tradition in America that if the ground sees its shadow, winter will end on Groundhog Day. If not, the winter will last six weeks (ending at the spring equinox). Groundhog Day seems to be synonymous with Europe in terms of whether groundhogs, wolves, or bears (rather than turtles) get their shadow.

Many believe that Groundhog Day and Candlemas are traditionally associated with pre-spring celebrations in the old calendar. It seems to me that it was confusing to have two competing dates for the winter finale. Perhaps it would be better to let something common (such as the shade of an animal) choose the end of winter to use, instead of arguing with your neighbors for the next six weeks… February is full of snow and the moon comes to light above 1:30.

EST Sunday, February 5 It will be below the sun at this time, so for best viewing this month, check from last night or later this week; it will travel above the eastern horizon around sunset and reach high in the sky around midnight.

See when the Moon will appear in your area. The Maine Farmer’s Almanac began publishing “Indian” names for the full moon in the 1930s and these names are now widely known and used. According to this almanac, as a full moon in February, families in the northeastern United States call this the snow month or windy month because of the abundance of snow during this season.

Why Is It Called The Snow Moon?

Bad weather and many storms made hunting difficult, so this month is called the month of hunger. NOAA’s monthly averages for Washington, DC airports (DCA and IAD) from 1991 to 2020 show January and February nearly matching the snowiest months of the year (with February one-tenth of an inch ahead).

March’s full moon is known as the worm moon: For centuries, people around the world, including Native Americans in the Middle East and Central America, have named the moon after natural signs. Each full moon has its own name, according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

According to an ancient Chinese legend, shortly after Buddhism was introduced into China, 17 gods were seen flying in the sky during the first full moon of the new year.

The people were amazed and delighted, lighting fires and lamps to see the godly creatures. They continue to do this year after year, but for practical reasons – to drive away insects and pray for a good harvest in the coming spring.
