When Does Ramadan Start?

The holy month of Ramadan is a month-long festival during which approximately 1.8 billion Muslims around the world will neither eat nor drink anything between sunrise and sunset. But the Islamic calendar is lunar, so there is no fixed date for Ramadan – like the Chinese or Lunar New Year.

The Fiqh Council of North America recognizes astronomical calculations as an acceptable Shari’a method for determining the start of lunar months, including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal. The FCNA uses the European Council for Fatwas and Research (ECFR) criteria, which is that the elongation at sunset somewhere on the planet must be at least 8 degrees and the Moon must be at least 5 degrees above the horizon.

If these conditions are met, it is certain that the Moon is above the horizon and will be visible somewhere on the globe. Hence the new lunar month will start from the next day, otherwise it will start from the next day.

On the basis of this, the dates of Ramzan and Idul Fitr are fixed. For Eid al-Adha, the Fiqh Council of North America decided that the determination of the date of Eid al-Adha would depend on the declaration of the day of Rafat by the Hajj officials in Mecca, in which case Eid al-Adha would be the day of Arafa.
