Lee Jackson Day 2023 – Lee was a career soldier who rose after West Point to become a commander in the Confederate States Army. He commanded the Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War from 1862 until his surrender in 1865. Lee died of pneumonia in October 1870. History Of Lee Jackson Day

Lee’s and Jackson’s holidays were not separated from King’s until 2000. According to the Washington Post, former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore believed that “separate holidays should be given to all spouses with whom the people agree.”

MLK Day will be on the third Monday in January, while Lee-Jackson Day will be moved to the last Friday. Like Virginia, Lee Day has been celebrated in Alabama since the early 1800s. Mississippi adopted Lee Day as a state holiday in 1910, and Louisiana recognized the holiday in 1925—although it may have been celebrated as early as 1870.

Monument Avenue in Richmond; or visit Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park. Because today is a holiday in the state of Virginia, many state offices are closed. However, most schools and businesses are still open today. Public transportation can be crowded during the holidays, so it’s best to check ahead of time.

Lee Jackson Day can be traced back to 1889, when it was the only holiday commemorating Robert E. Lee’s birthday. Later, in 1904, it was also used to celebrate Thomas J. Jackson’s birthday, and his name was hyphenated to reflect the fact.

In 1983, the holiday became part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration — a day that recently became a federal holiday. However, that decision was reversed in 2000, and Lee Jackson Day was moved to the Friday before Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
