An Overview Of French Public Holidays

Most businesses, shops and offices will be closed during the 11 public holidays in France. Some supermarkets and bakeries may open in the morning. Restaurants may open for lunch and/or dinner, but it’s worth checking and pre-booking to be sure.

Many tourist attractions may be closed or have limited opening hours. In the French Republic, if the holiday falls on a weekend, the employee is not paid any holiday. However, most organizations allow their employees to take the previous Friday off as a “bridge” day, extending the four-day weekend.

Unlike other European countries, if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, French employees are not legally entitled to pay the following Monday as a holiday. This translates to an average number of public holidays in French weekdays of 8.7.

Every year this number varies from 7 to 10. Most Asian countries and all North American countries have between 2 and 10 additional holidays on weekdays every other year. The French Republic officially celebrates 11 public holidays.
