Coptic Christmas 2023 – Coptic Orthodox Christians make up 90% of Egypt’s 20 million Christians. The Coptic Orthodox Church has been a separate Christian body since the schism at the Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD when the Coptic Church split from the rest of the Christian Church.
The difference in Christmas dates back to 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII ruled that the Catholic Church should follow a new calendar called the Gregorian calendar because it was closer to the solar calendar than the Julian calendar.

Latecomers to the Christmas service will be turned away. Christmas Day begins at 8pm and ends at midnight, when worshipers go home to break their 43-day vegetarian-pescatarian fast with local meat dishes such as fata, white rice, meat cubes and crusty bread dipped in soup.
Covered with a layer of garlic curd. Mainly because of the difference between the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The emergence of both Christian calendars is linked to a complex process dating back to the early days of Christianity.

In a sense, these two calendars are a reflection of the centuries-old “split” between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Churches. Pope Tawadros leads a service in Egypt’s new capital at a rarely used cathedral built in the desert east of Cairo.
The number of people allowed to attend this service is strictly limited, but it will be broadcast live. Before the Muslim Arab conquest in 640, Egypt was almost entirely Christian. It continued to be Christian until the 13th century.
