Chicago Booth Academic Calendar – The date of August 29 got the least number of votes – 24,409 to 24,001. A later date was preferred by slightly more parents, 53%. But CPS said it chose the earlier date because a large number of students, principals, teachers, other school leaders and central office chose that option.

Chicago Public Schools students will return to school on Aug. 22, according to the proposed schedule, which is subject to Board of Education approval at Wednesday’s monthly meeting. The proposed calendar represents a radical departure from tradition.

In 2004, according to records kept by the Illinois State Board of Education, only 16 of the nearly 1,000 school districts statewide had either teachers or students as of August 14. As of 2019, more than half of the state’s 910 districts have either returned teachers or classes will begin before that date.

For the first time, students will get a full week off for Thanksgiving break instead of the usual three days. First semester finals are completed before winter break, with a clean start to the new semester in January.

That makes the second semester longer than the first, but the calendar aligns more closely with suburban districts and local colleges and universities. Spring break is the week of April 3rd. Families have long appreciated the ability to wrap up summer projects and vacations before returning after the long Labor Day weekend, but the school year has dragged on into June.

Last school year, classes didn’t end until June 22, which is possible at the latest because Labor Day fell on September 7. In addition to starting a full two weeks before Labor Day, the proposed schedule has a deadline of June 7, 2023.

That adds up to four teacher organization days, four school improvement days, 176 student attendance days with two picture cards. Collection days. and four teacher professional development days. When CPS sampled pre-Labor Day this year, it saw lower-than-usual first-day attendance — 91.2% compared to an average of 94.3% from 2016 to 2019 — that was linked to the pandemic.

The last time classes started before the holidays in the 2013-14 academic year, about 93.5% went to school on the first day. CPS may be late to the trend, but it follows at least two dozen districts in Cook County — dozens more in DuPage, Kane, Lake and Will — that have started bringing their kids back to class by mid-August in recent years.

Some parents and teachers have complained that the later start for CPS means less preparation time for standardized tests, college-level tests like the ACT and SAT, and testing for Advanced Placement classes.
