an electric-only range with plug-in hybrids, which adds to its appeal. The navigation system has an augmented reality function that allows you to virtually superimpose the house numbers of the residences on the screen image outside.

But this is one of those features that basically sounds useful but is actually pointless. More useful is the system’s ability to display a traffic signal on the center screen, something we’ve experienced before on the road with the C-Class.

The new GLC-Class was lightly dressed inside and out during its drive at Mercedes’ Swedish winter proving ground on hard snow and ice, so we won’t comment too deeply on its design. But as our renderings show, it’s safe to say the automaker won’t tinker too much with the styling of such a popular model, so think evolutionary, not revolutionary.

Although it’s been on sale since the 2016 model year, its strong underpinnings and constant improvements mean the Mercedes-Benz GLC continues to outperform many of its newer rivals. In fact, the GLC only recently found itself at the top of our small luxury SUV rankings, with the Genesis GV70 overtaking it to take the title in 2022. In addition to the standard mild hybrid, Mercedes-Benz offers up to three plug-in hybrid options (

PHEVs). One will be a diesel hybrid, which is not sold here, although other gasoline models will likely be available in the US. The standard PHEV will likely be called the GLC 300e, and its electric motor will boost the four-cylinder engine, adding 135 horsepower and 324 lb-ft.

The second PHEV will likely be Mercedes-AMG’s sports hybrid-powered model tuned more for performance than economy. Mercedes hasn’t confirmed which PHEVs will come to the States, but we’d be surprised if the powerful AMG variant and the GLC 300e never make it to our shores.

The wheelbase has obviously been lengthened, with engineers admitting it’s 0.6 inches longer between the wheels, which may not seem like much, but it does make the cabin feel a bit more comfortable. The new GLC’s wheelbase has grown by just half an inch, and while that’s relatively small, it translates into a roomier cabin inside.

The effect, especially in the rear seats, is enhanced by the narrow arms of the front seatbacks, which provide rear passengers with good forward visibility. Headroom and legroom are decent in the front and two rearmost seats, with the middle seat better suited for children or small adults.

The impression of comfort is further enhanced by the aforementioned silence in the cabin in the difficult conditions of our test drive. We’ll have to test it on the road to be completely sure of those impressions, but based on our early drive with the GLC, it’ll be even quieter than the very comfortable new model.

Toll figures haven’t been released yet, but it’s not unreasonable to expect the new GLC to be broadly similar to the existing model, which again falls short of its best rivals. If it’s not big, roomy or can’t tow as much as you’d like, Mercedes-Benz dealers will be happy to steer you towards the GLE, although for most small families the GLC’s practicality won’t be lacking in many areas overall either.

Only one engine is coming to the United States in the new GLC 300. It’s a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The new transmission delivers 258 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Power is sent via a nine-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels or, on the GLC 300 4Matic, to all four wheels. The main torque boost comes from a 48-volt mild hybrid system that includes a starter-alternator mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

This will help increase fuel economy by allowing the engine to shut down and coast under light loads. The GLC also has SUV options, which you can find in a special sub-menu. A smart, optional 360-degree camera gives you a live view of the ground below the front of the car, which can help prevent grounding when driving your GLC off-road.

Our test of the GLC consisted of an early pre-production prototype, driving on ice and trampled snow, and it runs on diesel fuel, which we won’t get here. Therefore, our results will not fully apply to the US model.

However, we were immediately struck by the extremely quiet cabin, which was almost completely isolated from the engine and outside noise. The sense of calm was impressive, thanks in part to the new noise-deadening pad that Mercedes-Benz is using in the transmission tunnel.

Of course, part of the new GLC’s offering is a wider inclusion of safety equipment. Active Distance Assist Distronic (re: cruise control) can now operate at speeds up to 62 mph, where it previously reached around 37 mph.

Features like Active Steering Assist, Traffic Sign Assist and Intelligent Parking System are also improved and deserve some extra attention when we spend some time in the production car. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the GLC borrows heavily from the C-Class range, sharing its powertrains.

As usual, the engines offered will depend on your market. In the US, that means only the turbocharged versions of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engines. Mercedes-Benz has only released one number for this turbo four, which is a maximum output — excluding AMG — of 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

For Europe and other global markets, 2.0-liter turbodiesels with different capacities will also be available. Interior materials and equipment will change as you move up the range from the base GLC 300, with the AMG model sure to get sportier seats and trim.

Visual packages such as the AMG line from the existing GLC will likely continue to be offered. We’ll confirm the GLC’s interior specs and options when we test drive the production model when it launches later this year.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and its predecessor the GLK have sold more than 2.5 million units since their introduction in 2008. It is Mercedes’ best-selling model. All this makes the new very important. Due for a 2023 model later this year, we drove the new GLC in prototype form as Mercedes develops its new model ahead of its launch.

Given the fact that we drove the Mercedes-Benz EQE before sitting in the GLC prototype (in GLC 220d guise), we expected a lack of refinement compared to quieter electric cars. Not so, as the GLC’s four-cylinder diesel starts quietly and is barely audible at idle.

This refinement is also evident on the road, where the noise suppression under the Mercedes hood is truly impressive. The current GLC has consistently done well against its rivals, although it was recently dethroned by the Genesis GV70 in the small luxury SUV class.

Based on our limited test drive of the facelifted model, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC may have what it takes to reclaim the crown. A longer ride in the passenger seat on roads outside the test center only reinforced the overall impression of refinement and comfort.

The weather also gave us a chance to reach under the dashboard blanket. Unsurprisingly, the GLC shares much of its infotainment architecture with the new C-Class, meaning a large 11.9-inch center screen with portrait orientation and a 12.3-inch instrument screen in front of the driver.

. There’s also a new three-spoke steering wheel design that now includes touch controls. Control of all these technologies is well integrated, with all the main functions accessible via the large central touchscreen, and sub-menus for less-used functions can be found relatively quickly and easily.

The new steering wheel includes touch-sensitive control surfaces that allow you to further control many functions, as well as what is displayed in front of you on the digital instrument screen. If that’s too much, saying “Hey Mercedes” and asking it to turn on the heat, change the radio station, call mom, or perform other commands works pretty smoothly too.

There are also enhanced driver aids such as advanced road sign recognition, automated parking and trailer assist. Overall, the cabin feels more spacious than the GLC, especially in the back with more headroom and legroom. The narrow profile in the upper part of the front seats also contributes to the feeling of airiness.

As you’d expect given the badge, build quality is high, with excellent materials, form and finish, even in our well-used prototype. Trunk space increases slightly from the previous car’s 19.4 cubic feet, for a maximum seating capacity of 21.1 cubic feet.

The Microsoft Word document template is compatible with Google Docs, OpenOffice Writer and LibreOffice. There was some crossover here with the lessons learned from ultra-quiet electric cars and their inherent need to reduce other noises, aiding the development of internal combustion engine cars.

The GLC is the first model in the Mercedes-Benz range to have a 2mm bitumen sheet installed in the transmission tunnel, and its effectiveness is such that it allows engineers to do away with other, heavier sound-absorbing devices.

The material will certainly be used in future new and aftermarket models in the Mercedes range. There are no numbers to back up those impressions yet, but it’s almost impossible to imagine that the new GLC 220d won’t at least match, and possibly better, the 7.7-second 0-62 time quoted for its predecessor

in a pleasant drive on the road. With Mercedes-Benz already on the road to universal electrification, every engine in the new GLC range will be a ‘hybrid’, albeit a very mild one, and all will be equipped with Mercedes’ second-generation starter-generator integrated into the transmission, which

gives 22 hp and 184 lb-ft of drive combined with a standard 48-volt on-board electrical system. This highlights the all-round capability of this compact SUV, and Mercedes builds on these strengths in its upcoming replacement. Given the stunning success of the current model, it’s no surprise that changes to the facelifted GLC are incremental rather than radical.

The new 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC promises a larger interior and trunk space, improved refinement and a wider selection of infotainment and entertainment technologies, as well as an improved range o
f standard and optional driver aids. We recently had the opportunity to test a prototype at Mercedes’ winter proving ground in Sweden.

These plug-ins will allow the GLC to travel at speeds of up to 148mph using the electric motor alone, and optional fast charging capabilities can be fitted to take advantage of faster and more powerful public chargers.

Connectivity, entertainment, information and convenience features are enhanced for the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC. The second incarnation of Merc’s impressive MBUX interface, this central touchscreen contains everything from augmented reality navigation to the Energizing Coach, which changes several interior functions to promote well-being during the journey.

Much of this technology is optional, and Mercedes-Benz has yet to confirm standard equipment, but connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will likely be standard across the range. One of the more interesting features is the 360-degree parking camera, which also shows what’s under the body when you use off-road mode to help the GLC on the track.

As a prototype, the GLC we drove has had the interior trimmed to keep things under wraps until the official launch later this year. However, it is not capable of covering everything, and with the large number of functions related to both driving and comfort contained in the large central screen, it must be unfolded while we are driving.

It’s clear that Mercedes-Benz has almost completely changed the interior of the GLC from the new C-Class, which is no bad thing. That means there’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that offers a wide range of configurations to suit your preferences.

There’s also an 11.9-inch vertically oriented screen positioned between the driver and front passenger. If you’re looking for more electrification than the standard models, Mercedes offers three plug-in hybrids (though we don’t know which one will come to North America).

Two petrol models and one diesel will have more complete electric support. These plug-ins, which combine an electric motor with a power of 134 hp. and 325 lb-ft in a 9-speed automatic transmission and battery pack, give the plug-in models what Mercedes-Benz describes as “more than” 62 miles of electric-only range in the European cycle.
