At this school year’s NEXUS event, students showed visitors how to make Christmas table covers and last month’s Valentine’s Day floral arrangements. This spring, FFA students will demonstrate container gardening, a skill learned through hands-on experience.

“I like the ag class because I can get my hands dirty. I like plants and animals, but I’m interested in the landscape industry and I’m excited to learn more about growing plants,” said EVHS freshman Tyler Wray.
America’s Future Farmer has taken root locally, resulting in a growing interest in agriculture among Culpeper’s middle and high school students, including Eastern View. The state school system responded by expanding the selection of agriculture-focused courses that students can take for credit and gain career education in the classroom.

According to EVHS agriculture educator Melessa Suder, about 25 to 30 students participate in FFA competitions each year, with some participating in more than one each year. Culpeper students regularly go to the state FFA convention held at Virginia Tech each summer, he said.
The scope of FFA has expanded over the years to include agriculture classes ranging from small animal care and veterinary science to horticulture and floriculture to advanced electrical systems. Culpeper County Public Schools offers 10 grades of agriculture-based technical education, according to a recent release from the Office of Economic Development.

Greenhouses are currently used by three horticulture classes by district. It is equipped with automatic watering and fertilizer sprayer, which are the features of working in a commercial greenhouse. The experience allows students to gain knowledge that qualifies them for entry-level jobs at Culpeper.
A year of hard work in the greenhouse culminated in the sale of spring plants open to the public. A big success the past two years, the proceeds from plant sales provided students with funds to travel to state and national FFA competitions.
