Dallas Isd Intersession Calendar – DALLAS (CBSDF.com) — The Dallas Independent School District (DISD) Board of Trustees has approved three calendars for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years — two aimed at combating the “Covid slide.” The supervisor responsible for overseeing the Intersession pilot was Derek Little, Dallas ISD’s deputy director of learning and instruction.

Derek was able to devote 30-50% of his time to this work during design. He has received support from team members and others as needed, but it will take more time than that to move forward.

He had to communicate with the decision makers at the beginning of the trip so that the key questions were resolved and the work could continue. When it comes to continuous improvement, a common problem across the country is wasting time on multiple competing priorities.

We Are A Proud Intersession School

For Dallas ISD, the solution was to provide a unique opportunity that matched their intervention initiative. This capacity took two basic forms. “We are committed to ensuring that faculty, staff and parents are nearly 100 percent engaged on this issue,” Derek Little, executive vice president for learning and education, said during the meeting.

“We need at least 75 to 80 percent to answer before we think we have enough information.” We are pleased to be one of over 40 schools to adopt an ‘interim’ calendar for the next two academic years, starting in early August and ending in late June.

Click here to view a list of schools that have approved the intersessional calendar. ERS worked with Dallas ISD to provide third-party support for less than 1% of the total initiative cost. Support includes strategic planning (using research and best practices to inform design decisions), project management (holding weekly meetings against work plans), managing stakeholder relations (board and community updates, focus groups, surveys), and design.

This year, we selected three improvement cycles from Intersession’s work in Dallas ISD. The examples here are briefer than the often chaotic reality of real-life continuous improvement. However, they explain what they did with the district’s capabilities and stakeholder engagement, from design to implementation, making strong decisions and making changes along the way.

Applying a continuous improvement approach to program development and implementation is not a new concept for most school districts. But right now, with many areas still battling wildfires, strategic planning for Covid recovery funds can be difficult.

The larger idea is to spend time and resources on continuous improvement. This makes time for five additional transit weeks during the year. During media weeks, select students have the opportunity to receive more individual attention in small groups, and teachers enjoy additional planning time at the beginning of each media week.

Not all students are required to attend the additional interview week. When continuous improvement is done well, it starts with defining a theory of action and defining metrics for success, then moves quickly into an iterative cycle of improvement.

You collect data to see if the changes are working, find solutions, make tough choices, execute, then collect more data and do it all over again. Simply put: “set it and forget it” just doesn’t work.

With large-scale learning disruptions and increased scrutiny around the effective use of ESSER dollars, continuous improvement is more important than ever. Districts need to try new approaches, implement prototypes quickly and, perhaps most importantly, measure, communicate and adjust when they know what works.

The default choice for schools will be the traditional calendar. Schools may choose to join one of the other calendars depending on the needs of parents, teachers and staff. Currently, district officials are determining which schools will and will not.

For the Intersession pilot, Dallas ISD engaged students, teachers, staff, community members and school leaders through surveys and focus groups. Another remarkable feature of Dallas ISD’s Intersession pilot approach was that district leaders made strong and transparent design decisions at every step.

Based on decisions based on understanding the desired experience and sending a message of willingness to adapt along the way, the pilot program takes shape even when the final destination is unknown. The district regularly communicates to schools which areas of implementation have been identified and are open to flexibility, increasing school leader confidence in the ultimate vision of self-sufficiency.

With interruptions occurring frequently throughout the academic year, continuous improvement played a key role in ensuring that poorly executed aspects of the program were quickly corrected and mistakes were not repeated. During the first few weeks of the transition, the district intentionally tested key aspects of their design, analyzed baseline data, engaged design teams for input and feedback, and prioritized implementation changes between each session.

Both calendars extend the school year from the beginning of August to the end of June, but their timing is different. A key “big bet” that emerged was interleaving: multi-week blocks interspersed throughout the school year that provide ample opportunities for remediation, acceleration, and enrichment to meet students’ unique needs and interests.

In 2021-22, the district is piloting an intersession calendar at 41 elementary and middle school campuses, representing the bottom 20% of schools. In the coming days, district leaders will meet with everyone and find out how they feel about the options.

More information on next steps is expected at the next council meeting in two weeks. During the engagement process, Dallas ISD ensured that input was representative of the families their engagement model was intended to serve.

This allowed Dallas ISD to develop a vision based on a deep understanding of the experiences of students, parents and teachers. With a relentless focus on continuous improvement, Dallas ISD continues to use these communication challenges to gather feedback from its teams as key elements of design changes.

In addition to this broad stakeholder engagement, Dallas ISD engaged district administration leaders early in the design process and at regular checkpoints to allow for adjustments along the way. These agreements include: Surveying families, teachers, and the Peeler community about next year’s (expanded) school calendar decisions.

90% of the survey must be completed by Thursday, February 18, 2021 to make an informed decision. Research has shown that the pandemic is having a significant impact on students academically, and the extended school year calendar can help students get extra support to stay on track for success.
