Historians have also noted that, until 1865, Texas remained a Confederate state, so Robert E. Lincoln’s Proclamation would not have gone into effect until Lee had surrendered and captured the Union Army. History Of Juneteenth

Two and a half years later, and two months after the end of the Civil War, on June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston and learned that the message of the Proclamation had not reached Galveston and that there were still enslaved people in Texas.
However, we know that many school districts in the United States suffer from funding inequities—especially in low-income areas. As a result, many children (and their teachers) are left with few books, school supplies and learning materials.
Based on the red, white, and blue of the United States flag, the Juneteenth flag represents the identity of slaves and their descendants as true Americans. The center star represents Texas and the outer star represents new freedom and new people.

One of the most important ways to support a black-owned restaurant this Juneteenth is to purchase a gift card. Many small businesses appreciate the rush of customers during Juneteenth or Black History Month, but many, unfortunately, only see support during national holidays.
