Skip to contentWashington State Employee Holidays 2023 – Employees may waive accrued leave for a government employee suffering from an extraordinary or serious illness or infirmity, or for a relative or household member, without pay or who may terminate employment. The Sole Services Shared Leave Program (USSLP) allows employers to permit government employees who are called upon to serve on sole services.
The USSLP is administered by the Department of Defense. For more information, please review the guidelines set forth by the Department of Defense. Leave without pay may be granted for chronic illness, maternity, academic research, or other valid reasons.

No salary or other compensation shall be received during this leave, although the employee shall maintain appropriate employment status. During a military conflict, an employee who is a member of the Armed Forces, National Guard, or National Guard is entitled to 15 days of unpaid leave when a military spouse is called to active duty or is on leave from work.

Shared Leave
Military study leave with pay is allowed for a maximum of 21 working days in a year. An employee who is on active duty in the military, US Peace Corps, or US Health Service is eligible for unpaid leave.

If reinstatement is requested within 90 days of discharge, the employee shall be reinstated to his or her position in the civil service or to a similar classification and pay grade. The Family and Medical Leave Act provides for the next 12 weeks of leave to employees who have worked at least twelve (12) months and at least one thousand two hundred fifty (1250) hours during the previous twelve months:
