Late in 1837 one of the Voortrekker leaders, Piet Retief, entered into land negotiations with Dingane, the Zulu king. According to the negotiations, Dingane promised land to the Voortrekkers on the condition that they returned the cattle stolen by Sekonyela (the Tlokwa chief).
This Retief did and apparently he and Dingane signed a treaty on February 6, 1838. During the ceremony, Dingane had Retief and his entourage killed – an event witnessed by Francis Owen, a missionary who described the scene in his diary.
