If you own a resort, you can use points from that resort to reserve a room 11 months in advance. If you are trying to book a resort away from home, you can only book your room 7 months in advance.
This raises two critical questions. How hard is it to book a resort for 11 or 7 months? The answer varies by resort, room reservation category and time of year. The main difference between an owner and a renter is that the owner has 11 months in their resort home.
A tenant will have to find a landlord with an 11-month lead or have to wait for a landlord to book their complex within a 7-month period. Rooms in highly desirable areas often go within seconds of opening for 7 months.
High Demand Periods
If we are talking about other complications that require you to wait until the 7-month window opens, the answer will be different. Episode 162 DVC also offers a “Guaranteed Week” option that allows the owner to secure a reservation each year for a specific timeshare week, in a specific room size and view, at duration of their ownership of DVC.
And while it might look like a traditional timeshare, it’s not. You don’t lock yourself in just for the week you shop. People who want to book the week between Christmas and New Year may be interested in this option.
Of course, since this is a decision you make at the time of purchase, it may not be relevant to this discussion. The tables show the average of the last consecutive free days to book a specific accommodation during a week in the last 4 years.
These are the same availability numbers you see when you reserve a unit on the DVC website for a week. The numbers are color-coded in the traditional red/green light format, with green being the most available.

After you’ve been a member for a while, you start to realize that the most popular times to use DVC points aren’t necessarily Christmas and Easter or the traditional peak periods.
They are still very popular in DVC; however, the most popular times are the cheapest times that occur when schools are in full session: January, September, October, November, and the first two weeks of December. If you notice, what all these periods have in common is that they are the lowest point cost periods on the DVC point charts.
If you wait and try to book any DVC resort 7 months in advance, your success may depend on the room type, resort, view, length of stay and time of year you are trying to get.
If you book in the off-season for DVC, you’ll likely get what you want. The longer the desired reservation for a room, the more difficult it is to get it 7 months. Both Boardwalk Villas and Beach Club Villas can be difficult to reserve during the Epcot Food & Wine Festival if you wait long after the 11-month window opens.
The same applies on a smaller scale to the Wilderness Lodge from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day (due to the large Christmas decorations).
