There was a great famine in Sicily, caused by a medieval drought, and the people prayed to Saint Joseph for help. These prayers brought great rain that spared the spring crops, and it is believed that this is why every year in March the feast of St. Joseph is celebrated.

During the Sicilian Famine, when food was scarce and many were starving, the poor people had only to rely on their faith. Saint Joseph was known as the protector of the Holy Family; thus, Italians with strong family ties prayed to Saint Joseph to intercede for them to ensure a successful harvest.
Their prayers were answered and the famine ended. In gratitude, people vowed to offer their most precious possessions – food – every year in honor of Saint Joseph. The Gospel says little about Joseph, except that he was a descendant of David and a carpenter.
According to the Christian Bible, Saint Joseph was the husband of Mary the carpenter and the earthly father of Jesus. Therefore, the feast of St. Joseph honors all fathers. According to tradition, Saint Joseph’s birthday is on March 19.

This year. Saint Joseph’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday 19 March 2023, although in European countries (and other places where it is an official public holiday) it has traditionally been moved to the following Monday.

In Sicily, participants usually wear red and the so-called “St. Joseph’s table.” This table is often decorated with flowers and candles, and people place wine and foods on it that are considered lucky. Some of these lucky foods include fava beans, lemons, and foods containing wood shavings. All of these foods have symbolic meaning.
