December January 2023 Calendar – Most of the goods imported into Germany in January 2023 came from the People’s Republic of China, worth 12.7 billion euros, which was a decrease of 6.0% compared to the previous month, after calendar and seasonal adjustments. Imports from the United States rose by 8.8% to 8.3 billion euros. Imports from the United Kingdom rose by 13.1% to 3.3 billion euros in the same period. Exports to the Russian Federation increased calendar-year and were seasonally adjusted by 12.3% to 1.0 billion euros in January 2023 compared to December 2022 and down 60.0% from January 2022. In January 2023, the value of goods exported to euro area countries was 50.8 billion euros (+0.5%) and the value of imports was 40.3 billion euros (-1.0%). Exports to the United States also rose to 12.7 billion euros. Exports to the People’s Republic of China increased by 1.4% to 7.7 billion euros and to the United Kingdom by 7.8% to 6.1 billion euros. The results in this press release are provisional data from monthly foreign trade statistics. As detailed results have not yet been obtained, it is not possible to provide information on general changes in foreign trade or the reasons for trade with individual countries or groups. After calendar and seasonal adjustments, Germany exported goods to the value of 130.6 billion euros and imported goods to the value of 113.9 billion euros in January 2023. The foreign trade balance showed a surplus of 16.7 billion euros in January 2023. Calendar and current adjusted profits were €10.0 billion in December 2022 and €12.1 billion in January 2022. The fact that adjusted values are always calculated as ‘imaginary’ values is important for evaluating calendar and seasonal adjusted values. For this reason, comparisons between adjusted and unadjusted (nominal) series are not useful. In January 2023, the volume of goods exported from the European Union (third countries) reached 58.7 billion euros, while imports from those countries were 54.2 billion euros per day, calendar and seasonally adjusted. Compared to December 2022, exports to third countries increased by 3.8% and imports from these countries decreased by 7.5%. Wiesbaden – German exports increased by 2.1% in January 2023, while exports decreased by 3.4% in the calendar year and were seasonally adjusted compared to December 2022. Based on provisional data, the Federal Bureau of Statistics (Destatis) also reported that exports increased by 8.6% and imports by 5.2% in January 2022. Germany exported goods worth 125.2 billion euros and imported goods worth 114.4 billion euros (not adjusted for calendar or seasonal effects) in January 2023. Compared to January 2022, exports increased by 12.2% and imports by 7.7% in January 2023. The unadjusted foreign trade balance showed a surplus of 10.8 billion euros in January 2023.
