Anthropology deals with the biological aspects of humans and other primates past and present (biological anthropology), material culture and an investigation of past ways of life (archaeology), contemporary cultures (cultural anthropology), and the complexities language and communication (linguistic anthropology).

Our faculty has expertise in the national and global study of race and blackness in the traditional disciplines of African American studies, anthropology, art history, history, interdisciplinary, social work and public health. Applied linguistics is an interdisciplinary field that incorporates many perspectives on the study of human language. The study of linguistics is not about learning several different languages, but rather the study of the nature of language in general.

Applied linguistics is the study of language and communication in relation to real-world problems, such as language acquisition and teaching, language assessment, large-scale and small-scale language analysis , improving cross-cultural communication and understanding the relationship between language and social organization or behaviors.

Students majoring in Applied Linguistics have the option of earning the Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) at the same time, as the certificate requirements overlap with the courses required for the major.

Applied linguistics students also have many opportunities to study abroad. The department offered programs in Mexico and Argentina, as well as an exchange program in Turkey. Students can save time and money on tuition by earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in applied linguistics in just five years.

This dual degree opportunity allows qualified students to enroll in graduate courses late in their undergraduate program and apply the courses to their bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. Our faculty specializes in a number of sub-disciplines including Second Language Acquisition (L2), L2 Writing, Sociolinguistics, Language Assessment, Corpus Linguistics, Educational Technology and Training L2 teachers. The program aims to prepare students to critique and produce accounting research suitable for publication in leading accounting journals.

During the program, students take compulsory doctoral seminars in accounting and research methodology, as well as optional seminars in other fields compatible with their research interests (for example, economics, finance and psychology). Our STEM curriculum covers advanced topics including InsurTech, Actuarial Analytics, and Machine Learning. The Graduate Certificate in Actuarial Science will prepare you for the transition into the field of actuarial science.

Talent in this area is highly sought after. By taking just four courses, you’ll prepare for the P (probability) and FM (financial math) exams required to become a chartered actuary, while gaining relevant knowledge in insurance, statistics, and coding.

Actuaries have been called financial architects and social mathematicians because of their unique blend of analytical and business skills in the insurance and financial services industry. They serve as consultants in benefits and pension companies, in the government sector, and in a variety of other roles.

To be recognized as a qualified actuary, a person must become a member of the Society of Actuaries or the Society of Casualty Actuaries. Membership is obtained by passing a series of examinations. Completing Robinson’s Actuarial Science program greatly increases the chance of passing these exams.
