What Makes Great Stock Photography?
For print jobs, resolution is important. Standard photo prints are at least 640 x 480 pixels, but your printer and designer may want something larger. Photos should be as clear as possible, with no visible artifacts or noise when zoomed in.
Avoid photos that are even slightly out of focus. There’s also high-resolution vector graphics, which looked great when tested on our 4K monitor. It’s also helpful to add a “free” tag so you can download images immediately.
The main restrictions apply to photos of identifiable individuals, branded products, and private property (not just people’s homes, but certain public places). Getty Images has a great guide to intellectual property (opens in a new tab) that you should check out before you get started.

We’ve rounded up our top picks of free stock photo sites to help you find the images you need. All images on these sites are free to use for personal, editorial, or commercial purposes (and are great with our best free photo editors), but there are a few restrictions to keep in mind.
Most photos are covered by Adobe’s standard license terms (opens in a new tab), which are very permissive and only prevent the distribution of the files themselves and the creation of products whose value depends on the photo itself (for example, a photo poster

Pexels is a particularly good choice for web or app designers because it has a large collection of device images that are perfect for displaying interface mockups. A few images suffer from photographic cheesiness (for example, ideas that are difficult to depict written on scratched tiles), but the vast majority are creative and original.

Pexels has a category dedicated to space photography, which looks amazing, but remember that some of the material is from NASA, an organization whose images should only be used in a specific context. But be aware that many of these sites accept contributions from amateur photographers who may not be fully aware of the model publication rules (opens in a new tab) for photos of people, and don’t ask their subjects to sign a waiver.
If you are not sure, it is better to contact the site directly. As with all photo sites here, you don’t have to give credit to the photographer, but Unsplash notes that it’s fine to include a simple credit with a link to their profile as a courtesy.
