Trial Work Period
If so, disability benefits will continue for three months (the grace period) and then stop. Here’s why wait times for disability claims are at an all-time high. Here’s also how to contact the SSA to resolve any questions or problems with your Social Security payments.
But the Social Security Administration (SSA) limits the amount of money you can earn from work while you’re receiving Social Security Disability benefits because if you can earn a high income, you won’t be considered disabled.
If you are not currently receiving SSDI benefits or if you need to appeal a denied claim, consider contacting a disability attorney. An attorney will be able to answer any questions you may have about Social Security Disability benefits and guide you through the claims process.
Studies have shown that those who choose to hire an attorney for their SSDI claims are more likely to receive benefits than those who do not. Some people who receive SSDI may have improved enough to want to try to get back into the workforce, but they worry that they won’t be able to keep a job because of their disability.

Supplemental Security Income Payments
SSA grants exceptions to SGA rules to encourage disabled SSDI recipients to try to return to work. This exception is called a “trial period”. If you can do what the SSA calls “substantial gainful activity” (SGA), you are not disabled.
A person who earns more than a certain monthly amount is considered “SGA-involved” and therefore ineligible for SSDI benefits. In 2023, the SGA amount is $1,470 for disabled applicants and $2,460 for blind applicants. (Federal rules use the National Average Wage Index to set the income limit for SGA each year.) For those with Supplemental Security Income, your payment schedule is slightly different.
It is usually paid on the first day of the month. However, if this day is a weekend or holiday, the payment is transferred before the working day. The work trial period provides nine months out of a 60-month period (which does not have to be consecutive) during which SSDI recipients can attempt to work without losing their disability benefits.
What counts as nine trial work months? In 2023, any month in which an SSDI recipient earns more than $1,050 is a tested work month. (Note that this amount is less than the SGA amount.) How soon you get your money depends on two things: your date of birth and the year you first started receiving SSDI money.
Holidays And Weekends Payments
SSDI follows the same schedule as Social Security payments if you haven’t received SSDI checks for decades. We’ll explain below. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is available to people who can no longer work because of a disability (physical or mental).
But only those who have paid taxes into Social Security for at least a few years are eligible for SSDI (see our article on SSDI eligibility to see how many work credits are required). Those who are approved for benefits receive monthly SSDI payments that are determined by their earnings over the past 35 years (the average amount in 2023 is $1,483).
