Ohio University is committed to promoting academic, social, and personal engagement in this community and to ensuring continuous improvement in the quality of the first-year experience through systematic assessment of student learning and engagement, academic practices and policies, and the availability and effectiveness of support services. Undergraduate major programs, pre-professional and professional programs prepare students for employment in various careers and for further studies. Two-year technical and part-time degree programs that reflect the employment opportunities and general career interests of students are taught primarily at regional campuses. Ohio University recognizes academic advising as a central element of the educational experience of its undergraduate students. Advising is a collaborative relationship in which advisers and students share responsibility and through which students create sound educational plans that are consistent with their academic, career, and personal goals. Counselors are responsible for accessibility and responsiveness to students and for providing accurate and timely information. Students are responsible for preparing for advising hours and for understanding university and major requirements. As a public university, Ohio University has a special responsibility to address societal issues and needs through such scholarship, research, and creative activities. The scientific and artistic activity of the faculty strengthens the pedagogical function at all levels of the student experience. Ohio University serves an extended community. The university’s public service mission, expressed in activities such as public broadcasting and continuing education programs, reflects the university’s responsibility to serve the continuing educational needs of the region. Regional campuses play a vital role in serving this extended community. These extended university programs are intended to serve a variety of educational needs, from professional groups who require continuing study related to the practice of their professions to individuals who desire occasional study or special interest study. The substantial concentration of faculty, materials, and spatial resources dictates that activity related to graduate and professional education will be centered on the Athens campus. This activity is not limited to this campus; research and teaching takes place in different locations. Ohio University has as its central purpose the intellectual and personal development of its students.
