Click here for more information. Students can generally expect to work an average of two days a month, some overnight, to see patients with acute procedures and injuries in the emergency room. The weekend schedule is generally flexible and allows students to schedule absences for major events as needed.
Students usually do not have clinical duties on the weekends, but some facilities are open for patient care hours (which should be checked on your website, which is the link on the FM office’s website). When evening or weekend clinical sessions are available, students will be reimbursed for an average of two clinical sessions per day during the week, excluding teaching days or holidays that fall within the week.

Most clinics will operate longer than scheduled patient hours, so you should wait approximately an additional hour after your scheduled clinic session ends. Your clinical program will be provided to you upon arrival at the clinical facility.

Click here for more information. Weekends and Shift Work: Most establishments have occasional weekend shifts. This includes scheduled weekend ward shifts or weekend shifts in the emergency room. Students may exchange weekend ward shifts with other medical students on their ward team when necessary due to schedule conflicts.
Similarly, students can change emergency room shifts if their schedule allows, without violating working hours or leave restrictions between shifts. Students may not engage in unauthorized trade in designated primary care clinics. Students can change expert sessions if there are no scheduling conflicts, but they must inform the participants they will be working with.

Student schedules for holidays other than Thanksgiving, Midterm, and Spring Break vary by venue and location. Other holidays (eg Mondays) and relevant weekends will depend on the student’s individual schedule and where they alternate, as some clinics may be closed but hospital services are active.
To be fair, we do our best to balance schedules to ensure students have roughly equal schedules in terms of length of service across the block. BU Academic Calendar is a schedule of all events that take place during the academic year, including the exam period, holidays and the last day of the term.

During the weekends when students work, students will continue as internal medicine assistants on the same days of the week with breaks and breaks in order to maintain the integrity of the medical department team and gain experience working in an interprofessional team.
