Ddtwo Calendar – According to another legend, the Pandavas from the Mahabharata returned to their hometown after 13 years and a day was celebrated to commemorate their return. Sikhs celebrate this day as Independence Day or the day Guru Hargobind was released from prison.

Jains celebrate this day as they believe that Lord Mahavira attained enlightenment on this day. Other ideas associated with Diwali include the coming of Goddess Lakshmi from the sea, the slaying of Narkasura by Lord Vishnu and the birth of Goddess Kali.

According to popular legend, when Lord Rama defeated Ravana and returned from 14 years of exile, the people of Ayodhya lit candles and diyas to celebrate his return to the kingdom.

The festival takes its name from the diya lines celebrating the return of Lord Rama, and hence the name Deepavali, which literally means “lines of fire”. The name has gotten convoluted into Diwali over the years.

This day represents the victory of light over darkness. The event is mostly held in India. Indians celebrate this day as the beginning of a new working year. People light up their houses 2-3 days before the festival and exchange gifts between friends and family.

On the night of the festival, prayers are offered to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi which is followed by bonfires and eating sweets and other delicacies. However, people abstain from meat and alcohol on this day.
