Early Childhood
Zoerhoff, who announced in November that he would retire June 30, was named Kentwood’s superintendent in 2013. He previously was the district’s assistant superintendent for human resources. He was also a teacher, coach, principal and assistant principal in the district.
The Kentwood Board of Education selected Polston from among six finalist candidates interviewed for the position in April, according to a school news release. The school board voted May 6 to begin contract negotiations with Polston.

To help students succeed in online learning, the superintendent fostered a partnership between Godfrey-Lee Public Schools and the Michigan State College of Education to provide elementary teachers with resources and strategies on how to lead a virtual classroom amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Kentwood Public Schools are tuition-free, publicly funded schools required by law to accept and educate all children from Kindergarten through Grade 12 in Kentwood, MI. Each of the fifty state constitutions includes a requirement to provide a public school system, and each state, including Michigan, also has a compulsory education law requiring school-age children to attend school.

Kentwood is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in West Michigan, with just over 9,000 students enrolled this year. Thirty-three percent of Kentwood students are black, 28% are white, 15% are Hispanic/Latino, 15% are Asian and 7% identify as two or more races, according to state data.
In addition, we are exposing elementary and middle school students to more careers, while expanding coursework and opportunities for students to experience different careers by the time they reach high school. Electronic resources are provided to allow students to explore careers and help prepare them for careers in high school.
We work hard to support students to succeed, including hiring the best staff to help them. In addition, we have behavioral and academic interventions to improve skills for students who may need extra help. Our Kent school service network provides families with the access they need to health care, mental health counseling and family outreach centers.
