Skip to contentMatc Calendar – Banda Aceh, Indonesia – Two men in Indonesia’s conservative Aceh province were each publicly flogged 77 times on Thursday after neighbors reported them to Islamic religious police for having sex. Dozens of people witnessed the attack in Banda Aceh’s Tamansari Municipal Park.
It is the third time Aceh, Indonesia’s only province that practices sharia law, has punished people for homosexuality since the Islamic law was implemented in 2015 as a concession by the government to end a rebel, long-running separatist conflict.

The men, aged 27 and 29, were whipped on the back and winced in pain as a team of five hooded and cloaked officers took turns relieving each other of the 40 blows. A Sharia code allows up to 100 lashes for crimes against morality, including homosexual sex.

Tension is also a punishment for adultery, gambling, drunkenness and for women who wear tight clothes and men who skip Friday prayers. With the exception of Aceh, homosexuality is not illegal in Indonesia, but the country’s low-profile LGBT community has come under fire in recent years.

The men were arrested in November after residents became suspicious and broke into their rented room, where they were caught having sex, said Heru Triwijanarko, Aceh’s acting Sharia police chief. A Sharia court last month sentenced each man to 80 lashes, but they received 77 lashes after being suspended for time in prison.

Four other people received 17 strokes for extramarital affairs and 40 for drinking alcohol.
