There are different types of legitimate claims, and there is no practical, ethical or legal way to evaluate individual claims. The establishment of the academic calendar for the University of Wisconsin-Madison falls under the authority of the faculty as outlined in the Faculty Policies and Procedures.

We are writing to remind you of UW-Madison’s Religious Action Policy and to highlight faculty legislation regarding Election Day rituals. As you complete your coursework for the upcoming term and enter the semester, please review the following.

Our policy is to be sensitive to the needs of individual students. The academic calendar formula is approved by the Faculty Senate. The Faculty Senate and Board of Trustees approve dates based on this formula that comprise the academic calendar each year.

The formula contains basic rules and is not widely applicable to all schools, programs, courses and teaching formats. For more information about the formula, see Academic Calendar Creation Rules. For other dates, deadlines, events, policies and university holidays, see the additional links to the right.

The list does not include all religious rituals and cultural observances that students may request, but should be used as a guide to understand potential scheduling conflicts for religious festivals that some students in your class may observe.
