After reading the methods described in the article, none of them seemed to fit my situation. When I ran the nslookup -type=all _vlmcs._tcp command, I found the existing KMS server (there were still many Windows 7 and Server 2008 machines in the environment, so it had to be saved), and
five domain controllers as well. That meant it wasn’t a DNS problem and my problems were elsewhere. So what does this RETAIL channel mean then? Well, it means that the media used to install the operating system was the MSDN ISO.
I went back to my client and asked if there happened to be a second ISO of Windows Server 2016 floating around the net. It turned out that yes, there was another ISO on the net and it was used to build dozens of other machines.
They compared the two ISOs and sure enough the one given to me to build the virtual servers was actually the MSDN ISO. They have removed this MSDN ISO from their network and we have now activated all our existing servers and no longer have to worry about activation failing in future builds.

Could this only be a problem with virtual machines? As an interesting side note at this point, my client informs me that someone in another department has also decided more than a dozen virtual machines for Windows Server 2016. So now I think I have another dozen servers that I don’t need to work with.

Surprisingly, if you want to get tickets, it won’t break the bank either… Now I think the key is broken for some reason, so I use the /upk switch, which removes the active key. While this was effective for removing the key, it’s usually not the best way to do it.
If the server is rebooted before receiving a new key, it may end up in a bad state. I found that using the /ipk switch (which I do later when troubleshooting) overrides the existing key and is a much safer way to go.
Learn from my mistakes! What went wrong? Why did I have to remove the installed key and add these shared keys to properly activate these machines? Why did the other dozens of machines activate without problems?
As I said before, I missed something important in the initial stages of the problem. I was at a complete loss, so I reached out to Charity from the first blog post to see if she could help me.

Well, I went back to my slmgr team to figure out how to activate these monsters. This time I will use the /ipk switch which will allow me to install the product key. I went to this site to get the appropriate keys for my standard version of Windows Server 2016. Some of my servers are data center but I need to fix these first.
My next thought was that sometimes stopping and starting the service does the trick, so I tried that further. I need to stop and start the Microsoft Software Protection platform service (SPPSvc service). From an administrative command prompt, I use the familiar netstop and netstart commands.

We have created a physical server with Windows 2016 Standard and the machine is properly activated. And this is where our story ends. I ran /dlv again to see the license details. Unfortunately, it didn’t give me any useful information, just an error: Product key not found.
Because of course there is no key since I just deleted it! The results show that we have two activation objects, one for Server 2012 R2 and our newly created KMS AD Activation (**LAB) which is our Windows Server 2016 license.
This confirms that our Active Directory is properly configured to activate Windows KMS clients
