Umaine Academic Calendar 2022-23 – Mayewski is proud to celebrate CCI’s 50th birthday and enjoy its achievements, but their work is far from done. The institute’s next half-century promises more discoveries and contributions to address the global all-encompassing challenge of climate change.

Since then, CCI has led a number of important projects that have led to groundbreaking discoveries. Scientists at CCI first mapped differences between climates during the Ice Age and today in the 1970s; discovered the importance of ocean-based ice sheets in the 1980s;

linking acid rain to human causes in the mid-1980s; unraveling the concept of abrupt climate change by studying ice cores in Greenland in the mid-1990s; and lead expeditions across Antarctica to assess the impact of human pollution in the 2010s.

Along the way, students at UMaine play a leading role in research and participate in other hands-on learning opportunities through CCI. Many are leaders in fields that study the physical, chemical, biological and social aspects of climate change around the world.

In 1973, Professor Emeritus Harold Borns, whose research focuses on the glaciers and glaciers of Maine, founded the Institute for Quaternary Studies with the goal of conducting interdisciplinary research examining the physical, chemical, biological, and social properties of the Earth over the past

2 million studied. years. In 2002, the institute changed its name to the Climate Change Institute (CCI). Mayewski discussed the 50th anniversary of CCI on last week’s episode of the Maine Question podcast, along with UMaine researcher Cindy Isenhour, professor of anthropology and climate change, and Dan Sandweiss, professor of anthropology and Quaternary studies and climate.

“Doing interdisciplinary science is not simple; it really requires being open to the methodologies of other disciplines and the issues they care about. For a problem like climate change, you need a multidisciplinary approach. It’s not enough to just have people in silos;

You want people to talk to each other and develop answers to shared challenges. It is bigger than individual research and/or academic units,” Mayewski said. “We offer graduate students and many undergraduates life-changing experiences through our approach to research and field expeditions throughout Maine, the polar regions, high mountains, deserts, and oceans” Our faculty, staff, and students come from a variety of religious backgrounds and cultures that serve to

to enrich and strengthen our community. Any event scheduled on a religious or cultural holiday may send a message of insensitivity or exclusivity to staff and students who cannot participate on that day due to their religious beliefs.

Therefore, please avoid scheduling important meetings, exams or other important events on these dates whenever possible to accommodate the observance of religious traditions for staff and students who must be absent for religious holidays throughout the year.

Some information about religious holidays can be found on the Maine University System’s Human Resources page. An extensive list is online at the Interfaith Calendar website (External website). The 2023 Student Symposium will be held on April 14, 2023 at the Collins Center for the Arts.

Presenters include George Jacobson, Director Emeritus of CCI; Jim Roscoe, professor emeritus of anthropology with an associate professorship at CCI; CCI alumnus Kimberly Miner, scientist and engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL); and CCI alumnus Kurt Rademaker, assistant professor of anthropology at Michigan State University.

Paul Mayewski, world-renowned polar explorer, climate scientist and glaciologist, has served as director of the CCI since 2002. He has led more than 60 expeditions to some of the most remote regions of the planet, including expeditions to Mount Everest with National Geographic and Rolex in 2019.
