Enacted in 2014, the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) created a framework to help protect groundwater by requiring local groundwater conservation agencies to develop and implement groundwater conservation plans. DWR supports SGMA implementation by providing regulatory oversight through the review and evaluation of groundwater conservation plans and by providing ongoing planning, technical, and financial assistance to local watersheds.
