Msu Denver Calendar – When the last of her five children started school, Maria Bernadette Freyta, 56, embarked on a new career journey focused on promoting healthy lifestyles to prevent and treat chronic diseases, addressing at the same time health disparities.

“All my life I’ve seen how amazing it is to help your community,” she said. “Having to do things alone is so isolating, but now that I can help others like me, it’s a great feeling.”

Perez Luna, a psychological sciences major with a minor in Spanish, sees her role as a mentor in the Bank of America Scholars Program as an opportunity to pay it forward to others who may be in her shoes one day.

“These programs give us the opportunity to expand and reach more students,” said Emily Matuszewicz, the Health Institute’s director of development and partnerships. “This is especially critical for historically underrepresented populations entering higher education who want to give back and serve in needed professions.”

The Bank of America program supporting Latino students is one of several health science programs in the MSU Denver Health Institute, a collaboration of 10 health-related departments on campus designed to strengthen the state’s health workforce.

“I didn’t see myself as someone who could necessarily make a difference,” Freyta said. “But thanks to MSU Denver, I realize how much of an impact I can have as a mentor and that we can empower each other.”

Patients receive better care from practitioners with a common racial or ethnic background, but the lack of physicians from underrepresented populations has resulted in a disproportionate number of physicians available to serve them. Only 23.1 percent of Latino adults reported sharing a racial, ethnic or linguistic background with their health care providers, compared to 73.8 percent of white respondents, according to recent data from the Urban Institute.

Scholars. “The workforce needs more doctors and nurses, as well as health care professionals, nutritionists, community health practitioners and more,” Chumacero said. “Health is very personal, and when you’re talking to someone who looks and sounds like you, who understands your background and the stigma around certain topics, it’s much easier to provide service and support.”

Bank of America’s $250,000 investment in MSU Denver’s Health Scholars Program is being used to support Chumacero’s role and hire fellow student leaders like Freyta, who help run the program and mentor other students. The funding will also provide grants to support students and pay for career-related uniforms and supplies.

Freyta, a graduate student in the lifestyle medicine program at Metropolitan State University in Denver, wants to build trust and improve health outcomes in her community. The goal is to get a boost from the Bank of America scholarship program, which aims to help Latino students enter healthcare fields.

Guided by full-time counselors known as medical career navigators, students are guided through their academic programs and into high-demand fields that “desperately need more diverse representation,” said Sammy Chumacero, the navigator for the Health Care Program.
