Eberron Calendar – The Blood of Vol has two special days that are not regular occurrences in the Gallifar calendar: the Secret of Blood which occurs at irregular intervals throughout the year, and the Day of Revelation which occurs on the 13th of Cria (where Cria represents the lost thirteenth month).

Sarlona is the last continent in Eberron, just as far north and almost completely on the other side of the world from Khorver. It is said to be a place of great beauty and fabulous wealth, similar to the Orient and the Far East.

And while getting there is dangerous enough, getting back is even more dangerous. Home to Eberron’s psionic active population, much of Sarlon is ruled by The Inspired, a form of communist government that commands the absolute loyalty of the common people, in large part due to their psychic influence.

The World Geography

Behind the actions of the Inspired are the Quori, racial psychic outsiders who were banished long ago, only to return with the ability to possess those who dream. 13 Cria – Day of Revelation. Cria is the “lost” 13th moon, which is of course related to the lost 13th sign of the dragon, the death sign of Taurus.

It does not exist in the modern calendar, the date is based on the older elven calendar which had thirteen months. Basically, the Sacrament of the Blood is reversed: each congregant drinks from a chalice filled with blood.

The blood is magically made drinkable, and also modified with various psychotropic substances, so that everyone enters the hallucinogenic “blood stream”. The past shapes the present, setting the stage for the future to come. On Eberron, a rich and intricate history helped create the current era.

What follows are the highlights of the past. The common era is counted from the birth of the Kingdom of Galifar (in the year since the founding of the Kingdom, or IK). Events from the distant past are shown as the number of years before the present day (–10,000,000, for example).

Dragonmarks Dragonshards The Draconic Prophecy

25 Siferos – Day of St. Valtrosa. Anniversary of the birth of the first paladin dedicated to the Silver Flame (as opposed to paladins of other faiths who converted). It is mentioned during the liturgy, but it is not a major holiday beyond that.

27 Vult – Khybersef. Literally the church’s reaction to the Dark Six festival of long shadows, when believers spend the night in intense prayer as a vigil against the shadow. Quests and crusades often start on Hybersafe.

Days last 24 hours, divided into day and night. 7 days make a week, weeks a month and 12 months a year. The moons correspond to the 12 moons of Eberron, and the featured moon is named after the month in which its orbit brings it closest to the planet.

28 Dravago – Promisetide. Whereupon the Church honors the Sovereign Host for creating the world that the Flame would later complete, and for stepping away to allow the Flame its rightful place. The existence of this holiday does no favors to the church among the followers of the Sovereign Host.

Time Calendar

Eberron is a typical fantasy world, similar to Earth in size and with an Earth-like climate and climatic extremes. It revolves around one sun and rotates in a typical period of 24 hours. Although there are thirteen moons, only twelve are visible in the night sky and only one of them is large enough to cause tidal effects.

In geosynchronous orbit around the equator is the Siberis ring, a massive asteroid belt clearly visible at night, from which the remnants of the Siberian dragons fall. Most of its land mass is divided into five continents, representing the breadth and breadth of climate variation.

11 Eire – Initiation Day. The anniversary of the declaration of the Church as a new religion and the beginning of work on the first cathedral. The beginning of the construction of new churches or cathedrals, as well as the completion of the seminary, are usually scheduled for this day.

Through this conversion, there are many references to campaign-specific materials unique to Eberron. People, places, events, groups, etc. I will not attempt to detail all of this material in this conversion. For that I would refer you to the material already published for Eberron, specifically the Eberron Corebook, the Five Nations, and the Player’s Guide to Eberron.

Detailed Weather With Custom Climates

However, much of what is covered in this conversion would lose much definition or impact if some campaign-specific information was not provided. Consider this an extremely high-level overview. In addition to the days listed below, Faiths of Eberron describes the events in life (birth, death, wedding, etc.) ceremonies that each faith performs.

I chose not to include that information because it doesn’t seem to be exactly what we’re looking for, but it’s worth knowing that the information is there. Eberron has 336 days in a year, divided into 12 months of exactly 28 days each.

This is to be expected as Nim, Eberron’s largest moon, is always full on the first day of each month, making this a true lunar calendar. Each month has four weeks of seven days, detailed below.

Most calendars, especially those in Khorvaire, have the current year as 998 IK, which is defined as 998 years since the founding of the Kingdom of Galifar on Khorvaire. Sarlon, however, marks his calendar with the Unity of Reidre, which sets the current year as the 1200th Unity.

The Last War

What kind of calendars were used by the dragons of Argonesen or the elves of Aerenal (or the giants of Xen’Drik) is largely unknown. Don’t just tell a story, paint the world with weather that realistically varies throughout the year.

Dazzle your players with cinematic descriptions of heat, snow, eerie fog or rainstorms – Just create some locations, no weather dice tables required. With its array of conflicts and confrontations, deceptions and intrigues, ancient mysteries and current politics, the world of
Eberron lends itself well to the kind of pulp action found in early 1920s and 1930s radio shows and film noirs.

While it can be used for standard dungeon crawling or remote land exploration as well as any other campaign world, it gives both the GM and the players to open up new avenues of adventure, new twists and tactics.

For nearly a millennium, the continent of Khorvaire was united into one vast kingdom known as Galifar. From that basis the Khorvaire calendar was born. The human royal family ruled for 900 years, and their reach extended to nearly every corner of Khorvaire.

The Planes The Moons

With such a large kingdom, it became necessary for the king to grant his grown children authority over their various territories, and the king in turn to rule over them. When the king passed, the eldest would take the throne, while his siblings continued to rule until the new monarch’s children came of age.

While there are thirteen planes to Eberron, only twelve of its thirteen moons are visible. The thirteenth plane, Dal Kuor, was shunted long ago, in the age of giants. The corresponding moon has not existed since then and is largely unknown even to the most learned scientists.

But it’s still out there, and the servants of the Dal Quori, the quori, want to get back to Eberron, one way or another. Similarly, the Plane of Xoriath, also known as the Plane of Madness, was last at the same time some 9,000 years ago.

The result was a swarm of Daelkir, creatures beyond madness or mortal power, who decimated the ancient goblinoid empire, the Dakaani. Fortunately, their invasion was halted, but not before their less powerful minions were able to escape into the countryside, leading to many Eberron defections.

Conspiracy Pulp Action

In addition to the astral plane, the etheric plane, and the shadow plane, Eberron is ‘neighboured’ by thirteen other planes of existence; each with its own theme and threats. These planes circle Eberron, converging (or coterminally) and receding (or receding), metaphysically speaking, in semi-regular cycles.

It is no coincidence that Eberron also has a large number of moons. While Nym, the greatest and brightest, is the only one capable of exerting any significant tidal force, they all move through the cycles of their associated planes, waxing and waning in power as days turn into months and years into centuries, each linked to

to their respective planes. After the last war and the sudden way it ended, Eberron is a world of intrigue. Behind the facade of peace simmering tensions grow and everyone is looking for the next new advantage to turn things around.

The degrees of the Thronehold freed and banned House Cannith from making weapons of war (something that funded much of their luxury). A day of mourning left the nation in ruins and the few survivors homeless.

Church Of The Silver Flame

The armies of the remaining nations are slowly retreating and turning their swords into plowshares, but no one is immune to the uncertainty that if they are up to something, what their enemies will do in response.

And all this says nothing about the activities of those not on Khorvaire. 6 Dravago – Baker’s Night. A great festival where all the faithful bakers and confectioners make magnificent pastries and similar treats to give away to the rest of the community.

No one has any idea what this celebration is or where the tradition originated, although it certainly dates back to the earliest days of the church. Argonesen is a large, rocky continent, far southeast of Khorvair, and is known to be home to dragons.

Not just metal dragons or chromatic dragons, but all dragons. They strictly guard their border, allowing only those who worship them as deities or high lords to enter or exit. While many human tribes make their homes along the coast (such as those on Seren Island and Totem Beach), it’s anyone’s guess what races they live with and work for these creatures of legend.

Druidic Sects

All that is known for certain is that there the dragons are always looking for signs of their legendary mission; understanding the Draconic Prophecy Aerenal is a minor continent, between and east of Khorvaire and Xen’Drik.

Not much bigger than Australia (relatively speaking), it has been the home of the elves since they managed to break free from their giant masters millennia ago. Unlike the elves of the other campaign worlds, the elves of Eberron practice a form of ancestor worship where their elders are preserved in a state beyond life or death, watching over their living descendants.

Immortals form the ruling body (and religious heart) of the Immortal Court, which presides over all elves who left Xen’Dric several generations ago and all their generations since. The first day of the week is the Day of the Purifying Fire, a weekly holy day where one meal is replaced by prayer.

The real-world parallels are obvious. In addition, they have thirteen holidays: 14 Zarantir – Revival. Winter solstice and when the Church celebrates the new year. This involves staying awake during the longest night of the year and then resting or celebrating the fact that the days will get longer and the nights shorter from then on.

Never Lose Track Of Campaign Events

The sects vary greatly, but the faiths of Eberron state that they celebrate the solstice and equinox. During the autumn feast, a special ceremony is held to thank Oalian, making him the most important of the four.

It involves a mild alcoholic drink made from a pinch of earth within each druid’s reach and poured some distance from Oalian to drink pine roots. 9 Baraka – Victory Day. Marking the successful completion of the Great Purge.

Children celebrate with mock battles and toy weapons, but adults attend sermons that should at least cover the Templars’ defeats and questionable methods as well as their triumphs. (no specific date) – Secret of Blood. This is just a thing that happens at irregular intervals, dictated by the Scarlet Covenant, and the timing of which tends to confuse even the local cult leadership.

Each member of the congregation cuts himself with a ritual dagger known as a blood fang and adds a drop of his blood to the chalice. This blood is secretly stored and transported around Khorvaire for various blood necromancy projects as an organization.

Dark Six

When the vendor tells your players “See you in a week!”, do you know when to say it again? What if it’s 6 months? Well, with the Fantasy Calendar you can track it in space, reducing time to an hour and a minute.

The seven-day week of the Gallifar calendar has, in areas with particularly strong Dark Six worship, each day associated with one of the six, and the last day with the Six as a whole. Dark Six fans also recognize six seasons rather than the usual four, one for each of the Six.

Also, oddly few specific holidays: Khorvaire is the central continent where most of the campaign material comes from. It has been compared to the Eurasian continent in terms of size and relative terrain. This is where the greatest progress was made in civilization, magic, technology, economy and culture.

In many ways, it feels more like a magical version of early 1900s Europe than a medieval fantasy setting. Many of the technological advances that were common on Earth in the early 20th century were reflected in the magic in Khorvaire.

Sovereign Host

Elementary powered transit systems dot the landscape. Communication and supervision is done through divination. Huge cities with millions of inhabitants were built. And all that combined with a healthier than average degree of patriotism and national aggressiveness makes this continent a very colorful powder keg.

24 Arit – Rampartide. Something like the opposite of Resurrection evening, a day of fasting and penance, which fortifies the faithful against the shortening of the day, the lengthening of the night, and the coming winter.

Xen’Drik is the main continent directly south of Khorvaire and is often referred to as the ‘Lost Continent’ or the ‘Dark Continent’. Full of jungles, mountains, ancient ruins and dangerous monsters, it is a place where many adventurers seek their fortune.

Others try to hide in the lawlessness of Xen’Drik and its several cities and towns. Once the proud home of the giants of a bygone age, the ruins of Xen’Drik are a stepping stone to more powerful races, where one step is over five feet tall.

Religion Alignment

Tribes of their degenerate descendants still roam those dense jungles, clinging to the legacy they left behind. All the while, the wood elves live on the surface in areas where the foliage is so dense that sunlight has not touched the jungle floor for millennia.

The traditional calendar (described in this chapter) apparently had 16-day “weeks”, with each day dedicated to a specific member of the Sovereign Host or Dark Six, plus one day for the pantheon as a whole. In modern times, the days associated with the Dark Six are instead associated with one of the Five Nations and then with the Kingdom of Gallifar as a whole.

Moons and moons are tied to dragon markings by tradition and legend, as shown below. There used to be a thirteenth sign and a moon. Most consider the thirteenth mark to be only a legend, but there are also those who know better.

In the early days of Eberron, dragons were possessed by fiends who came from other planes, seeking powerful slaves and vast riches. During their enslavement, the dragons learned of the patterns visible on the face of Eberron.

Written in the rocks of a mountain, wisps of cloud, or in the bed of a flowing river, these patterns have been deciphered as parts of a great prediction of events to come. One such event was when the dragons overthrew their devil masters.

Since that event many eons ago, the dragons have called this phenomenon the Draconic Prophecy, also known simply as the Prophecy. And while it can be misinterpreted, it is never wrong.
