What’s up? Deaths from counterfeit fentanyl pills are on the rise across the country and right here in our own school district. In the last 18 months we have lost several students to fentanyl-related poisoning – teenagers who had hopes, dreams and plans.

These teenagers had families who loved them and are still grappling with their losses. Teens buy what they think are OxyContin, Percoset, or Xanax pills on social media, but drug dealers make these fake pills with the cheaper, stronger, and deadlier synthetic drug called fentanyl to boost their profits.

The circumstances surrounding COVID-19 have presented our district with unprecedented challenges. Using the information we have, we make plans and decisions that prioritize the health needs of students, families and staff. This is an ongoing situation with new developments and significant uncertainty.

News Alert

The District liaises directly with the State of California, Kern County, the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, and all state and local health departments. To get through this difficult time, we will work with local education and government agencies and ask for patience, understanding, and flexibility from our DUSD family and the Delano community.

Have a nice summer everyone! I hope everyone finds time to relax with family and friends. As usual, the district is busy with many projects. I appreciate the efforts of the staff who have worked diligently to keep our schools looking good and ready to accept students in August.

Most of our staff will be back on duty soon and I look forward to seeing you all at our annual July 30th breakfast and during our staff development sessions. In May we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week (May 6-10) and Classified School Employee Week (May 19-25).

July Message

We take the health and well-being of our students and staff very seriously. Yesterday I called a meeting with key district officials to discuss and determine how the district can proactively and systematically protect our district family.

During this time, we all need to take personal responsibility and take these important steps to reduce the spread of germs and respiratory viruses. 1. Promote excellent hand hygiene – hand washing and use of hand sanitizer.

2. Promote excellent respiratory hygiene – cough and sneeze into shirt sleeves, handkerchiefs or handkerchiefs. 3. Discourage students from touching their eyes, mouth and nose with their hands – use tissues instead. VISION: We are a learning community of educators who hold integrity and excellence as our core values.

We look after families who have entrusted their children to us. We will earn this trust. We will be excellent role models; we will be highly qualified practitioners; and we will be dedicated and proactive in serving the personal and academic needs of our students and their families.

Our students love being at school because it is a safe, happy and exciting place. Our parents want their children to go to school because they know the value of education and know that their neighborhood school cares about their children.

Superintendents New Year Message

I wanted to reiterate my comments from our district breakfast last week. During a visit to the NASA Space Center in 1962, President John F. Kennedy noticed a janitor holding a broom. He interrupted the lead, walked up to the man and said, “Hi, I’m Jack Kennedy.

What are you doing?” The man replied, “Well, Mr. President, I’m helping to put a man on the moon.” He was right: although it seemed to some that this man was just busy cleaning up buildings

“The President knew he was part of a tremendous effort, yet he helped make history.” In all media coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic and in all guidance and advice, the Delano Union School District Superintendent saw it

, Rosalina Rivera, was missing something essential: words of encouragement. So she decided to do something about it. It began Friday morning when Jack Tillman, the district’s director of maintenance and operations, and two of his workers, Ralph Cruz and Jose Heredia, installed the first two signs with a simple message of encouragement not only for the district’s students and parents,

but for all who drive down Cecil Avenue, one of Delano’s busiest streets, and see the Cecil Avenue Math and Science Academy signs. “Together – we’ll get through this” in German “Juntos – Lo Sobreviviremos!” in Spanish, welcome back, district family and happy new year!

It’s great to be able to enjoy a little vacation, but it’s also great to come back and reconnect with colleagues and our wonderful students. We are beginning a new calendar year, but we are also in the middle of a school year, with many days of classes and many events and activities to look forward to.

As a district, I believe that we are fundamentally strong and we see many programs, departments, grade levels and school sites making the leap to the next level of performance and achievement. As a recent example, this is a good place to once again congratulate the Morningside School on officially receiving the California Distinguished School Award!
