What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)? Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can happen anywhere, to anyone, at any time, without warning, without symptoms, and regardless of age or health. SCA is often caused by an electrical defect that causes the heart to beat ineffectively.

Defibrillation, an electric shock through the heart, is the only effective treatment for this defect. This stops dysfunctional tremors and allows a coordinated heart rhythm to resume. Sustaining SCA depends largely on whether the patient is defibrillated.
