This is a difficult problem! The Waikiki® Swim Club focuses primarily on ocean swimming, and meets on weekends for long distance ocean swims. Many, but not all, of our members were competitive swimmers and swam in various Masters Swimming events during the week.

Others are strong recreational swimmers who have built up their confidence in the sea over time. In the pool we swim “yardage” intervals, but in the sea we do “mileage”, like swimming 2-3 miles on the weekend.

How Do Sea Jellies Sting?

Many members compete in various ocean races and biathlons throughout the year on Oahu (see ocean races page). Club members usually swim on Sunday mornings, mostly in Waikiki, meeting at 8 am at Kaimana Beach (also known as Sans Souci Beach), if conditions permit.

Many go to the north or west coast during the summer months when there is great winter surfing. During the Kona season, when the trade winds are light, we might go to Kailua on the windward side of the island to swim around Popoia or Mokuloa islands.

Despite all these silly and contradictory suggestions, there is a very effective remedy for man-of-war, jellyfish, bee and scorpion stings. That’s ammonia! Regular household cleaning ammonia is already a 4% solution. Mix it 50/50 with water to bring it to a 2% solution.

Place it directly on the stem. Don’t do anything else at first. Put it well and it works. It does not work for sea urchins. I have tried and used vinegar, hot water, etc. I have not found it to work for sea urchins.

But ammonia neutralizes the acidic toxins in jellyfish. In Mexico they use Windex but only for the ammonia in the Windex it is a waste of resources and time. Keep some pre-mixed in your duffle/beach bag so you can throw it on.

That’s one thing I know for sure! If you are tired, you will find good news below. A lot of research is going on in jellyfish stings, and the University of Hawaii has developed a radical treatment in the works.

Jellyfish have been a problem in Hawaii for a long time, and they’re only getting worse here and globally. It is very small. Also, it only has four tents. At its largest, its length is less than half an inch.

It has a transparent, bell-shaped body. And it flows in a great mass near the surface of the sea. 2. Time. While jellyfish will begin to appear on Hawaii’s Pacific Ocean beaches 8 days after the full moon, the problem will last for 3 day

enters the solution easily) rub on the affected area. Papain breaks down proteins and thus neutralizes toxins. A significant number of eclipses during the lunar cycle give birth to mature airbox jellyfish (Altina alta) swimming off the coast of Oahu.

That’s according to a published study covering more than a decade of work by a cross-disciplinary team of University of Hawaii researchers on vanoa. 4. Friends recommend it, and we’ve used After Bite itch eraser for years.

It is based on ammonia and baking soda and in our experience works well for pain relief. There are also a variety of new prevention and treatment products available, some of which are controversial (read reviews).

Let us know what has worked for you. 10/31/21 In Lahaina I got a jellyfish stuck around my forehead. It was burning like hell and my hand was burning around it. I used white vinegar and it worked well to relieve the pain but when I actually got the vinegar, it had been almost an hour and the mouth was already gone.

More information about Sea Safety can be found on the Oahu Lifeguards website. Also, check out the Oahu Box Jellyfish Calendar, below. These critters appear about 8-11 days after the full moon in the month. We recommend that you do not swim when jellyfish are present, or expected.

They are mainly found on south-facing shores, but are occasionally shown on north-facing shores. Always check with a lifeguard about dangerous conditions before swimming. Taking part in organized events will help you set goals and measure your progress.

And, you’ll start meeting people you want to swim with. Check out our Ocean Races page for some events to target. The Waikiki Swim Club plans to hold some swim clinics in October and November at the University of Hawaii, Duke Kahanamoku Swim Complex.

Despite their many charms, Hawaii’s beaches aren’t all fun and games. You may have seen the beaches, or even Oahu’s popular snorkeling spot Hanauma Bay warning visitors not to swim because of jellyfish. Although it is a nuisance, this security measure is not that unusual.

Bring a light colored hat for swimming in the sea. Bright pink, green, orange, red or yellow are the best colours. Black, white and yellow colors should be avoided. Wetsuits are not required, but sun protection is.

Apply waterproof sunscreen at least 30 minutes before entering the water, especially on your face so it doesn’t get into your eyes which can cause irritation and swelling. Some people need a little Vaseline on the neck or other areas where it stings.

Jellyfish are interesting and contain about 95% water. They have needle-like spikes attached to their tentacles. When activated, the spike shoots into the prey, releasing the venom. All this happens in millions of seconds. I “swim” with box jellyfish at Spencer’s Beach in Hawaii 15 years ago.

Very badly damaged and in very poor condition when a friend took me to the Waikula Fire Station. They sprayed a solution of vinegar and (drum roll please) Adophs Meat Tenderizer. The results were immediate for me and my overnight snorkeling partner which relieved us of excruciating pain within a minute or two.

location Hawaii’s south-facing beaches are full of jellyfish after eight days. These include Waikiki, Ala Moana Beach Park, Hanama Bay, and Waianae Beach on Oahu. Kauai may have warning signs posted at Poipu Beach and even salt ponds.

Maui Beach and Big Island beaches are also affected but generally have less problems. Jellyfish appear at the same time every month. Why are the problems worse, and where do they come from? A recent study conducted over 10 years at UH Manova addressed these questions and more.

Here’s what they found: UH scientists are addressing issues of importance and concern to residents and visitors who enjoy Hawaii’s coastal waters. It is also very important for other tropical islands that have endemic populations of this same species, Alatina alata.

Although there are over 40 species of box jellies worldwide, Altina alta is the only species that exhibits this clockwork shaper spawning migration behavior. There are no mass emails to all members about the Sunday Open Ocean Swim as these are not club sanctioned events and there are no lifeguards or chaperones.

Groups progress, at the same speed, through time and knowledge of each other’s swimming levels. WSC has a Facebook group for members only, where people can communicate with each other. “The period of the lunar cycle with a significant number of hours of darkness or ‘absence of light’ encourages the adult animals to move to the shoreline specifically for swimming,” says Yanagihara.

“Furthermore, as divers tracked migration in the water, we encountered a strong current from the south-east (diamond head) that box jellies were swimming over successfully, but we could not dive with tanks and large cameras. Their swimming speed and power was incredible!”

Led by Angel Yanagihara, associate research professor at UH Manoa’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) and the John A. Burns School of Medicine, UH Manoa researchers have carefully monitored native box jellyfish for more than 20 years being

tracking . While the monthly beach totals are seen like clockwork 8-10 days after a full moon, with jelly predictions included in the local news, the mystery remains: they are on this particular part of the cycle

moon Why do they appear? Where do these box jellyfish come from and where do the rest of the moon rings come from? Why has this only become a monthly issue in the last 30 years?

This work is an example of the UH Manoa Research Excellence Goal: Promoting the Research Initiative and Creative Work (PDF), one of four goals identified in the 2015-25 Strategic Plan (PDF), which was updated in December 2020.

One of the most exciting things about visiting Oahu is its stunningly beautiful beaches. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it has 227 miles of coastline and beaches for all types of visitors, including the popular snorkeling destination Hanauma Bay.
