into several controversies that led to lawsuits and withdrawal attempts. The school is currently being sued over a policy towards transgender students and an equality initiative against racism. “Many districts, including ours, have held back calendar approval in anticipation of the General Assembly ordering remote learning days or allowing schools to open early, as it did last year in response to Covid. We don’t think there is any message from the General Assembly at this time,” said Superintendent Frances Herring, who is coordinating the calendar selection process.
In addition to the change in the calendar, the decision involves a three percent increase in teachers’ salaries. The increase is in addition to a 7 percent pay increase passed by New Mexico lawmakers and signed into law by the governor.
