The historic fabric of the county is irreplaceable in every corner of the county, from the Egg Preserve to Silver Spring, and understanding the role of the HPO is a critical part of planning. Americans are aware of such public history in ways they haven’t been in a generation, an
d HPO strives to share that history as widely as possible.
Although the Historic Preservation Office focuses on the built environment (which sets us apart from other historic societies), the HPO also has resources for genealogy, tax credits, and more. From restoring and promoting specific sites to painting a more complete picture of the diverse people and places that have shaped—and continue to shape—modern Montgomery County, HPO helps ensure that future plans are based
in and can be seen in a thorough and critical assessment of what has come before. History lives in our present.
