If you register and are accepted for such an activity, you will be paid the fee per session noted in the contract. Selection for most activities per session is based on individual criteria established in each posting, which appears on the DOE website.

Retention Rights

If the activity you want is specifically listed in the contract, selection is based on meeting the posted criteria and your seniority in the system. After completing two consecutive years of satisfactory service in the same activity, you will earn “retention rights”, giving you priority employment in future years in the same activity.

To exercise your liens, you must indicate on the session application form (most session applications are filed online; some still require a paper application) that you have permission and must register for the same activity within the time limit specified in

post. You may exercise your burdens for only one activity per school year, although you may register for more than one activity per semester during that period. Teachers accrue sick time in the same activity per session based on one session in 20 consecutive school days worked during the school year.

During one summer activity per semester, teachers receive one day of sick leave for each month of service. If you don’t take sick leave in July, you can take two days off in August. Summer activities one day sick one day can self-medicate, but the second day must have a doctor’s note.

Sick Time

Professional assistants only receive medical leave for work each session conducted during the summer. Their summer sick time is accrued in the same manner as faculty. Here is the 2022–23 school year calendar for all 3K–12 NYCDOE public schools.
