Tcbc Ride Calendar – Ten years ago, such detectors existed only in the Pacific Ocean. “Everything froze very quickly in Banda Aceh,” said Tom Alcedo, president of the American Red Cross in Indonesia. “Roads were pushed up to the highlands. All those in their cars were chased away. It was a wake-up call.” Vivi Yanthi, an English teacher in the town, recalled that the water was hot, black, oily and filled with garbage. Evacuating Banda Aceh, Padang and every other coastal city miles inland would leave no safe defense against future tsunamis. “The situation is completely chaotic,” said Siarifa Marlina Al Mazir, a Banda Aceh resident who worked for the Red Cross during the 2004 tsunami.

“Instead of evacuating to safer areas, people are driving home or taking their children to school causing traffic jams.” Ordito Kodijat, director of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Center in Jakarta, said Banda Aceh and other coastal cities in Indonesia should set up good evacuation routes and conduct regular tsunami drills.

According to him, many people in Banda Ase are unaware of the fact that evacuation centers have been built. Others who witnessed the ferocity of the 2004 tsunami deemed the structures dangerous and tried to flee inland instead.
