Simpson’s source of raw materials is the first pre-consumer step that is incredibly intensive on the earth’s resources and destroys the ecosystem. All clothing materials – even the synthetic ones – are spun from natural resources.

Pre-Consumer Impacts

The finishing and dyeing process accounts for 36% of the fashion industry’s global pollution, while the production of materials such as yarn and other fibers accounts for 43%. The creation of fiber is highly dependent on fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas, while the cultivation of cotton and the dyeing process require a lot of water.

About 145 million tons of coal and 2 trillion gallons of water are used in the production of clothing. With the large-scale withdrawal of fresh water, the main source of water used for clothing production, the volume of potable water is being used up faster than it can be recharged, meaning we cannot meet our current and future water needs.

Tip of the Month: If students are living at home for the summer, take time together to set expectations. Things like contributing to the household, scheduling communication, and planning family activities can help create a smooth transition.

Textiles In Landfill

By 2021, PIRG.org reports, 85% of our clothes will be in landfills or incinerated. Not only do consumers throw away their clothes, unused and unused clothes are also thrown away. When we produce clothes of poor quality, we run the risk of quickly wearing out the textile because it only lasts through many washings, eventually tearing the material and releasing the plastic fibers.

Some consumers throw their clothes in the recycling, but 60% of the materials made from textiles are not recycled and end up in landfills. As students finish their first and last semester exams, they get ready to go home for winter break.

Open Closet’s mission is to provide a safe space for people of all gender identities to freely browse and find the clothes that best fit them. At the same time, it diverts textiles from landfills in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint and support a circular economy.

What Is Open Closet?

When faced with the individual, fast fashion seems like an invincible enemy. However, there are resources available to consumers that allow a deeper look at what sustainability means for each company. Websites like GoodOnYou can make all the difference when shopping online.

GoodOnYou is an easy-to-access site where users rate their favorite brands on their sustainability efforts. For example, you can search for “Fashion Nova” or “Urban Outfitters” and compare the brand to “Raven & Lily” or “Patagonia” to see what makes a clothing brand truly ethical.

With 80% of the environmental impact of the fashion industry occurring at the design stage, reshaping buying habits can help close the fast fashion cycle and push circular fashion into the norm. While adjusting to environmentally conscious consumption can be overwhelming, there are resources to ease the transition to ethical buying.

Sustainability has three pillars: environmental, social and economic. Sustainability addresses how these three pillars work together and how this interdisciplinary field affects each of us. Sustainability is the abili
ty to meet the needs of growth, development and life of the current human population without destroying or reducing resources, the environment or other limited requirements so that the future population is in the same or better quality.

Tip of the Month: Your students don’t need to go home for health appointments or prescription refills. The Student Health Center accepts most insurances and has an on-site pharmacy. Make sure students have their own health insurance card for benefits.

Students without health insurance are also welcome and have access to services at discounted rates. More information can be found on the Student Health Center website.
