It is in this context that we have to make decisions about the spring academic calendar. Our mission is to provide an outstanding academic and co-curricular experience for every member of our campus community with a focus on health and safety.
And as we have done since the beginning of this pandemic, our plans and decisions depend on information and advice from national, state, county and campus health officials. If there’s one lesson we’ve learned throughout this pandemic, it’s this: We must be agile and flexible, and expect change.
If new information comes to light, we will not hesitate to change our plans accordingly. College is a big investment for you and your family. The University is here to help. As part of our commitment to making an excellent education accessible, we offer a variety of financial aid programs, including scholarships, grants, loans and student jobs.
On or before the first day of class – If a full-time undergraduate student drops a course or courses, thereby changing the student’s total number of registered credits to 11 or less, the semester fee is assessed on a per-credit-hour basis.

I am writing today to share plans for the spring semester. COVID-19 continues to affect every aspect of our personal, professional and academic lives. Provides new information daily about the coronavirus: how it spreads, upcoming vaccines, positive rates, its impact on our mental health, and quarantine/isolation guidelines.
And at the time of this writing, the number of cases in our state and country continues to rise sharply as news reports suggest a vaccine is on the horizon. Residence Life and Student Services On-campus residence halls will once again operate at a reduced density, and students will be allowed to live in single rooms only.
Students returning to campus housing may join by appointment between January 23 and February 8, 2021 (first-time students may join by appointment January 21-22, 2021). This session is open to students, faculty and staff and will review how to apply for leave, the approval process and policy information.

This session is useful for students who are expanding their families through foster care/adoption, students who are guardians and/or parents/guardians, students who serve in the military, and students who require long-term care. . This is a great opportunity to learn about resources, ask questions, connect with other students, and support your well-being.
A large-scale 9-day campus-wide testing event is scheduled for two weeks after spring break beginning March 22, 2021. All students, faculty and staff coming to campus are required to participate in this testing event. The goal of the Terrapin Commitment Program is to bridge the gap between a student’s total financial aid package and the cost of education.
The program begins in January 2023 and ensures that tuition and fees are fully covered for Pell-eligible, in-state, full-time enrollees who do not meet financial need. More details can be found on the Office of Student Financial Aid website.
Spring break — March 14-21, 2021 — will also continue as planned. This is a more difficult decision. Allowing students to leave campus poses challenges for reducing the spread of the virus. We also recognize the tremendous stress and pressure 12 months of the pandemic places on our community.

Maintaining our mental health is just as important as our physical health and we are implementing safety measures for the mid-semester break. After the schedule adjustment period, the same dropped and added credit exchanges will not be accepted.
Courses added and dropped after the schedule adjustment period will be charged as follows: 0% refund for drop and 100% credit fee for any additions. Students may add, drop, or change course sections during the schedule adjustment period.

A similar timeframe is set for summer, winter and 12-week terms and any courses that do not conform to standard term dates. Check relevant academic deadlines or non-standard course deadlines for exact dates. The spring academic calendar is similar to the spring semester, with a hybrid teaching and learning environment. We expect 25 percent of the course to be conducted in person and the remaining 75 percent online. We are scheduled to begin our spring semester on January 25, 2021.
As we did in the fall, with a few exceptions the first two weeks of undergraduate instruction will be conducted entirely online. This allows us to test and initially limit movement within our de-densified campus. The two weeks of instruction immediately following spring break — from March 22 to April 2, 2021 — will also be conducted online.
This allows the university to conduct large-scale testing across campus before resuming individual classes. It is also important to note that we will continue to provide quarantine and isolation spaces on campus for students who test positive and/or have been in close contact.
We adhere to CDC guidelines for protocols for these quarantine periods. The University Health Center will distribute more information in the new year, including exam dates and registration information. Graduate students may receive a refund for dropped courses during the schedule adjustment period.
Students may drop and add courses without penalty as long as the changes are made on the same day and the total number of credits remains the same. Graduate students are paid by credit hours. A percentage and/or full charge will be made according to the schedule below: Full-Time Students – Drop Refund Schedule Full-time undergraduate students will not receive a refund for dropped courses if a total of 12 or more credits are enrolled.
. Note: During the schedule adjustment period, students are not charged for dropping and adding a course of equal credit value, such as dropping CHEM 678 and adding CHEM 691 (both three credit courses), and are treated the same.

day it is considered an equal exchange. Remember, to avoid extra charges while dropping off and adding, both drop and add should be done on the same day. Courses taken at Shady Grove and other campuses do not count toward the same exchange calculation.
All of these plans should be considered tentative and are subject to change based on many factors, including national and state protocols, compliance rates on and around our campus, and adherence to our 4 Maryland protocols.
The University Health Center conducts large-scale campus-wide testing during the first week of the semester and will increase the frequency of campus-wide testing throughout the spring semester. All students living on or near campus and all faculty and staff visiting campus are required to undergo weekly COVID-19 testing.
As a reminder, anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 or an intentional exposure to a positive case of COVID-19 may be tested at the University Health Center at any time. You received your admission letter, checked your major, and started celebrating with family and friends.
