Establishment of the University of Wisconsin-Madison academic calendar falls under the authority of the faculty as outlined in faculty policies and procedures.
The construction of the academic calendar is subject to various rules and guidelines set forth by the Board of Regents, the Faculty Senate, and Wisconsin State Legislation. For additional dates and deadlines for students, see the Registrar’s Office pages.

Religious Exercise Policy In accordance with Regent and Faculty policy, faculty are requested not to schedule mandatory exercises on days when religious attitudes would cause a significant number of students to be absent from the University.

Some religions mark a multi-day celebration that begins at sunset the day before the holiday. Any student who has a conflict between an academic requirement and any religious practice must be offered another way to satisfy the academic requirement.
A student’s rights to a religious conflict involving travel time must be accepted at face value. Note that this year Ramadan falls from March 22 to April 21. Muslim students who observe Ramadan fast from dawn to dusk during the last month of the academic year.
