Last week, IOM completed site assessments at sub-district health centers (puskamas) in Aceh Barat and Nagan Raya districts. IOM will build up to 12 SHCs there as a temporary solution to healthcare needs until the permanent facilities are fully operational.

All required components are now manufactured by Acehnese contractors who employ an estimated 700 local men. In many cases the workers are internally displaced persons who move into the homes they have built.

On another plot in Tingkem village, 32 new homes will be ready to move in this week. An estimated 600 units are in various stages of construction around Banda Aceh. The temporary school is a simple adaptation of the locally built RISHA II transitional housing IOM currently being built around the provincial capital of Banda Aceh.

In collaboration with partner agencies such as the North Sumatra Provincial Health Office and the World Health Organization, IOM will hold a two-day capacity-building workshop in Medan on medical evacuation procedures in earthquake-affected areas starting on 23 June.

The term of the new school is starting from 18th July. In preparation for further bicycle distribution, IOM interviewed 64 school children in Naga Umbang, who have been recipients of IOM’s school bus service, about their needs for future transportation assistance. Based on this assessment, IOM distributed 45 cycles in the same village on 25 May and stopped the transport service the next day.

IOM intends to complete construction of the Bireuen SHCs by mid-June. In Aceh Besar, construction work is already underway at Ruyong, while construction of the stadium complex at Meulaboh began on 30 May. IOM is providing start-up support, technical advice and capacity-building expertise to the Aceh Province Office of Social Affairs (DepSos) in an effort to support the government’s initiative to collect accurate IDP information.
