Culpeper students often go to the state FFA convention held each summer at Virginia Tech, he said.
“I like senior classes because I can get my hands dirty. I like plants and animals, but I like landscape design and I like learning more about planting trees,” said EVHS freshman Tyler Ray. The field of FFA has blossomed over the years to include agricultural classes from animal husbandry and veterinary science to horticulture and horticulture to electrical systems.

This spring, FFA students will demonstrate container gardening, a skill learned through experience. The greenhouse’s year-round charity project concludes with a spring sale open to the public. A huge success for the past two years, proceeds from plant sales provide funding for students to travel to state FFA and national competitions.
Now the greenhouse is used by three agricultural classes, according to the district. It is equipped with automatic irrigation and disease control, which is demonstrated when working in commercial greenhouses. The experience allows students to gain knowledge, qualifying them for entry-level jobs at Culpeper.

Future Farmers of America is putting down roots locally, fueling a growing interest in careers in agriculture among middle and high school students in Culpeper, including East View. The public school system is responding with an expanded selection of agricultural courses that students can take after graduation and receive vocational training during their studies.
