Shravan Mas

This festival is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. It usually falls on the last days of Krishna Paksha or the dark Paksha of the month of Magha. It is the main festival of Shivaratri.

Devotees stay awake all night praying to Lord Shiva. They also fast during the day. This month is named after Magha Nakshatra. Because on the full moon day of this month, the moon will be in opposition to Magha sign.

In the solar calendar, the Sun begins its northern ascent and enters the zodiac sign Makara (Capricorn). The first day of the moon’s bright phase or Shukla Pa{aksha is the Sampada Gauri Vrata bathing day. On the third day, Lalitha Vratam devotees worship Goddess Durga.

Each day celebrates a different form of Goddess Shakti, the feminine form of the Supreme. On this occasion, devotees worship Goddess Durga with flowers, rice, incense and saffron. Devotees chant the Durga mantra 108 times a day.
